Gorgonzola is a dinosaur who scares other dinos away not because of his sharp teeth or fierce roar, but because of his stink. The story is great, and the concept is super, but the bird who ends up helping the poor ostracized dinosaur is just plain rude to him. This is the kind of tone that I wouldn't want my child to imitate. For this reason, I think this is better for the older picture book readers in the house: kids who are old enough to know that reading about someone who talks that way might be funny in a book, but talking that way to others in real life is hurtful.

An amazingly smart and witty book about presidential assassinations written by a woman who's love of placards rivals my own. Sarah Vowell is unabashedly in love with history and its many quirks, and it shows in her writing; granted, I love reading books on history in any way shape or form, but it can't be denied that Vowell does a fantastic job at making history both entertaining and approachable... Not to mention accurate. -C

3,5 stars really as, once I actually got into it halfway through, it became rather magical. But half a book is too long for that to happen. Still this was an interesting world, different from those I have read about lately.

This was one unforgettable and beautifully written book. The characters were so well drawn, that at times when I remember them (more than a year later) they seem almost real. It is particularly difficult to include children in novels with adult plots and adult issues and make it work. These children were not cute or simply adults in disguise. They were kids caught up in a nasty situation and they kept me, as a reader, with them all the way. I highly recommend this book. Not only does it make you desperately want to know what is going to happen. At the same time, it can make you stop and re-read a sentence to enjoy it for its own sake--for the insight it delivers or the sense of recognition it sparks.
