I've been meaning to reread this school book classic for years and I finally found a copy the local op shop. A really good read. A story about really grown up things told through the voice of wonderful little girl.

This may be the least known American classic. Stunning use of language. Reading it took my breath away...

Read this in sophomore English in high school. Honestly, I barely remember it. Something about ducks...

A tale of love and of self-discovery, set in a quintessential English village that's beautifully described. Major Pettigrew is on the surface thoroughly set in his ways, content with a comfortable, albeit somewhat lonely, life, and viewing change with suspicion. It's a life that will never be the same after he invites Jasmina Ali into it. We see the world, and the man himself, firmly through Major Pettigrew's eyes, which makes it all the more interesting as he gradually gains more and more self-awareness, and is forced into re-examining what he truly values That makes it all sound rather heavy, and consciously "worthy", which it most certainly is not. The author has a wonderfully light touch with her characters, and the book is well leavened with humour. People who initially appear almost as stock characters generally turn out to be far more complex and interesting. Until we've spent more time with them, we can no more assume that we really know these people than the Major himself can. The climax, with its unexpected (to me, at least) villain, contains quite a brilliant mix of the absurd and the truly chilling. And the ending has a satisfying and believable dose of piquancy mixed with its sweetness.

I read River Angel on a recommendation a long time ago, and then decided to come back to Ansay. Vinegar Hill was fascinating for its darkness and yet humanity. Though many of the people in the book are fairly horrible, they're not villains so much as just people who have been damaged in various ways. I like the way in which she usually portrays communities or families of people. She's a bigger picture writer. It was very comforting after having spent some extended time with my own family to see how very messed up other families can be. And fascinating in that as you're reading, you just want to reach in and slap the characters around until they act right, but you know that this would be impossible even if they were real people standing in front of you.

LOVED it. Yes, sometimes his characters are a little exaggerated, and yes, they all sound like a brilliant middle-aged male writer - but I have no problem with that. Sometimes it's nice to have an absurd happy ending.

I first read this book when I was in fourth grade. I have searched for it ever since. I was overjoyed to find it again. Reba Paeff Mirsky writes a beautiful tale of a young Zulu girl growing up in Africa amongst her large family. The sequal is Seven Grandmothers, which again finds Nomusa learning as she grows to womanhood. The final book in the trilogy Nomusa and the New Magic, challenges our heroine to decide whether to remain within her traditional cultural role or to become a nurse and bring the magic of antibiotics to her people. Fascinating.

Not for the faint of heart, NEW YORK is powerfully written. Its length will be daunting to some, but Rutherfurd captures the essence of NYC. His characters are well woven into the history of New York. I can't give it a 5 as there were some problems with the plot and sequencing...some of the history was "glossed over" and/or vague. However, it held my attention and I did like how the characters progressed. I have visited NYC twice and this novel allowed me to visit it again.
