I am overwhelmed by this book. The sheer horror, the sweet love, the intense sadness - it has all led me on an emotional roller coaster. There were both happy and sad parts that took my breath away. Amazing book that still continues to touch me.

I am kind of annoyed with Goodreads for apparently not adding the reviews I write in the iPad app onto my actual account (that I see on my computer). Do others see my review, or...not so much? I could swear I wrote one! Anyway...I have had this book on my list of "Want to Read" for quite some time and after our last book discussion decided I must read it sooner rather than later. That, and I noticed Patrick Rothfuss had it on his own personal Top 50 Recommended Books List. That sealed the deal. (I went to the library for it, so sorry I cannot share it with you.) I really liked this book and would highly recommend it, but what I really want to know is - did this book inspire others like it or was it the first (flying animal linked to human telepathically and bonded for life)? If it was the first, then I understand why it is such an important work. If it was not, then while I enjoyed it, I am not sure what all the fuss is about. I have to believe it must have been the the first of that particular genre, but then I am left wondering why everyone is so enthralled with Avatar? (Okay, that was a movie, not a book, and the cinematography or whatever you call it was, truly excellent and just downright beautiful; but then didn't he kinda steal this idea from Anne McCaffrey? I would be sort of upset if I was her...) Moving on...read it. It's good. :-)

Fantastic. Donna Tartt knows what's creepy, what's intelligent, what's haunting about Vermont, ancient Greeks, and moodiness. So absorbing it transcends genre distinctions.

This is one of the best - if not the best - book I've read about Auschwitz. There is much information taken from interviews (from prisoners and soldiers)and documents. It's mmore of a personal look at the beginnings of the camp and what it was originally planned fpr and all that went terribly towards the end of the war. And the very sad and awful treatment of some after the war ended. I thought it was very moving and very informative. It is some times graphic but I couldn't put it down.

Was my least fave of the three, but I definitely wanted to know about his relationship w/ his mom as an adult, so it was still an interesting read (although the stuff about his marriage I found less interesting...).

A good idea buried under screeds of exposition. It purports to be an exciting historical mystery, told in the currently faddish mode with a modern learned heroine and an ancient heroine who does exciting stuff. In fact the modern girl is the most drippy dippy girl in all the world with some kind of affection deficit disorder, having affairs with any man who looks at her. The ancient girl is a bit better, but in a rather authorly-calculated manner, never actually does her hareemly duties, but is 'rescued' by 'events'. Get some backbone characters! And you Author lady! Recommended for: someone drippy on an undemanding beach holiday.
