** spoiler alert ** I saw the movie of Chocolat before I read the book. In fact, I read the book because I liked the movie and thought that if the movie was that charming, I was sure to like the book even better. Now, I did enjoy the book for the most part. I thought that the back story of the Reynard, the priest, the mystery of his past and of his confessional visits to his comatosed, childhood priest were intriguing. I also thought that through the subplot of Armande and even Guillaume's dog, Charly, there were some thought provoking themes of prolonging life vs. enjoying life vs. quality of life. On the other hand, I think there was a tendancy to paint the "bad guys" rather one dimensionally. Most of the villagers who oppose Vianne are uptight, judgemental, hypocrites, bullies and bigots. There is no room in the narrative for good people (or even people with both good and bad) to disagree or to act on any other motivation than being small minded and malicious. The book is also rather black and white on the matter of religion. The bad guys are religious, the priest and his "Bible Groupies." The good guys are completely non-religious, pagan or attend Church casually and for reasons that have very little to do with faith. The priest is depicted as the Black Man, the embodiement of evil and death and is vanquished on Easter Sunday, so much so that he leaves town without preaching Mass and the chocolate festival with the pagan overtones replaces the Christian celebration of the Ressurection. With all this in mind, I have to say I liked the movie better. I liked the mythology of the movie better. I missed the "Clever North Wind" when I read the book. The characters were more three dimensional and had real motivations behind the way they acted even if you didn't agree with them. The character of the Reynauld is split into two characters, a young priest struggling to find his footing in the village and the controlling but well-meaning mayor which did a lot to remove or reduce the anti-religious tones present in the book. And the ending was better.
