I had read so much about this book, but was disappointed that it just didn't deliver as promised. I liked the first part of the book, especially the parts taking place in 1942, but once the book started focusing on Julia, I lost interest and it took me awhile to even finish. The modern day characters were not at all fleshed out by the author, and the storyline felt contrived and even like a soap opera. It would have been a much better read if the author had just focused on the events in 1942, and eliminated telling Julia's story, which played out like a Lifetime movie.

Fantastic debut to a fun murder mystery series! I thoroughly enjoyed the heroine, 11-year-old Flavia de Luce, as well as the intricate mystery. Flavia is unconventional, intelligent, nosy, and mischievous. If you're an Anglophile, you will appreciate the very English setting, from her ancestral Georgian mansion of Buckshaw to the local village of Bishop's Lacey. Flavia rides everywhere on an old bicycle that she has refurbished and named Gladys. The youngest of 3 daughters—her older sisters are named Ophelia and Daphne, but nicknamed Feely and Daffy by Flavia—her mother having died when she was only one year old, she's left alone and almost shunned by both her sisters and her still-mourning father. Because of her independence, she goes about self-confidently solving the murder of a stranger found dying in their cucumber patch, using her knowledge of chemistry and sheer force of personality. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series, "The Weed that Strings the Hangman's Bag".

This book underscores why Peter Singer is the most influential philosopher living today. He takes his utilitarianism very seriously, and the implications of this philosophy, if followed, would radically change our world for the better. In this book, Singer lays out the case for why those of us in affluent nations should be giving to charity to help the poor worldwide. What is actually most surprising to me is the final section in which he lays out the numbers: if the richest 10% of those in the US (and the equally wealthy worldwide) would give at higher levels than they do now but at levels that do not adversely affect their lifestyles, we could effectively end world poverty. Still, the burden should not fall on the richest 10% alone: most of us not in the top 10% of America's wealthiest (those of us earning less than $102,000 annually) could still easily give far more than we do by simply giving up some of our more frivolous spending. This book provides an excellent case for being more generous and eschewing the oft touted American individualism (what I would actually call selfishness: for a literary example of this selfishness-as-a-virtue, see Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged); rather than looking out only for ourselves, we should be looking to help those less fortunate than us, and Singer's arguments here provide the basic moral and practical reasons for such altruism.

Wow I really loved this book. Its definitely not your typical novel, but that's what I loved. Pure poetry, and definitely worth multiple reads.

A great non-fiction book about what happens to those bodies that are donated to medical science. Things got a little gory for a while in describing body snatchers and cannibals and head replacements (I didn't like reading about all those dogs being decapitated and then having their heads sewn onto other dogs) It makes me happy to be an organ donor (if I am declared brain dead at some point) but not want to donate my body to science. But thankful to those who do.

Like Les, i found this book to be OK. Many of the characters were such self absorbed jerks that I never really took to them...Altho i sure did enjoy the scandel and seduction coupled with history that tantalizes me about Philipa Gregory.

If you love the charm of Irish country stories, then this book is for you. It is a continuation of its predecessor and simply picks up where the original left off. Though not an animal book, lovers of James Herriot type stories will probably enjoy Taylor's series.

This sequel to "Insatiable" is fast-paced and satisfying.
