Ann Dee Ellis’s sparse prose is almost flawless paired with the content of Everything is Fine. As with most stories that involve difficult content, the less you know, the easier a story is to stomach. I would contrast Ellis’s novel with a novel like Thirteen Reasons Why. Like Thirteen Reasons, Ellis’s novel deals with a subject so dark that it’s almost too horrible to read. In her novel, Ellis avoids indulging the rubbernecking reader. That is, she doesn’t make the horrific scenery a huge part of the story. The relationships between Mazzy and her mother, her father, Norma, Colby, and the other people on her street take center stage in the novel, rather than the accident with Olivia. As Mazzy takes on the responsibilities that should go to her mother, we see how much she loves the people in her family, how much she wants everything to be fine, normal, and simple. To contrast, in Thirteen Reasons the narrator spends quite a bit of screen time in-scene with the horrific events that drive the novel, and sets the readership at a much older age. With Ellis’s novel, we care deeply about Mazzy and her family more than we care about the disturbing origins of the family grief.
