Brilliantly funny, inventive and well written. The Greek gods living (with limited powers) in modern-day London is a great premise, though risky. She successfully avoids cliche though by exploring the human side of these gods, allowing them room for growth in utterly surprising ways and failure in some unsurprising but equally funny moments.

When I saw this title, it got me thinking about books about family in general would be a good addition to our early reading with Natalie about getting a new sibling. This book mostly focuses on the differences and similarities between families, more than types of family remembers, which is what I had been hoping for. But, it was still a good book. It points out how different families can be including step families, adoption, long distance relationships, single parent families, and same sex parents. However, if you are super conservative (as in, I'm going to home school my child to protect him/her from radical democratic values), then this is not the book for you. Otherwise, this book is a realistic and simple introduction to different types of families that keeps coming back to the similarities that matter.

I think Ishiguro is a beautiful writer, and this book is actually very similar in tone to Remains of the Day. However the plot seemed a little out of left field in it's scifi nature, as it was very unexpected. Takeway: Beautiful writing, excellently moody, but odd plot

This was an interesting examination of some of the problems caused by framing everything as an argument. I'm not sure that this happens as often in our society as Tannen thinks it does (maybe it's because I'm in Canada?), but I can definitely see the problems she descibes in media and politics. The examples of other options were interesting, and I was happy to find that Tannen didn't try to set any of them up as a perfect solution.
