I read this in the store to see if I would like to own it. He has some wonderful things to say about how life goes. I found it inspiring and like the use of folklore and fairy tales.

This is stuff that most of us know but is a great reminder to put these truths into practice. I have bought copies for my son and daughter.

This book could be a dorky LDS fiction series, but I think it helps to show that life is life. Not always good, not always bad. These friends stick it out through it all. I was pleased with this series.

** spoiler alert ** This was a bumpy but ultimately interesting read. The first part was confusing and disjointed enough that I almost put it down (the white guy wears a clown nose and drags his black wife around in a little wagon? huh?) - but once the white guy takes on the role of the teacher and starts reading Great Expectations to the children, I was intrigued. Sure, there are not-so-subtle shades of post-colonialism. (Does the book that transports the children in their imaginations really have to be written by a dead white guy?) But as a reader who continues to read because of the transformative power of books, I bought that. A story is a powerful thing. Then the physical book is lost. Colonialism's role in the loss of the book is an interesting subtext here. But the book is gone, and the children still need the story. So, with the help of the teacher, they reconstruct it. They "retrieve" it. This process is psychologically fascinating from the get-go and becomes even moreso later when Mr. Watts/Pip tells his own personal story, which is a complicated mashup of his own life and that of Dickens' character. Talk about the transformative power of a story! If Jones' story had ended on the island, I would be irritated and probably disgusted. The parts about the war had so little context and were very confusing (which is probably how the villagers felt, too). They were also physically violent, and that is never easy to read. But the author let Matilda escape this environment so that she could continue her own "retrieval" process. I needed this part of the book, which was very much like an epilogue. I didn't love the process of reading this book, but it has given me a lot to chew on. Thanks for sending it my way, Judy!

A book I read because of a NY Times review. Very interesting, but I was let down a bit by the ending.

I was a little disappointed with this one, especially since I loved the first book so much. After all the suspense that was built up in the first book, this one felt anticlimactic - it felt so much like nothing was really happening. Also, the whole thing with Dimitri sort of grated on my nerves after awhile since it started to feel overdone...although I do like him better than James, who mostly just seems lifeless to me. Hopefully the next book is better.

I would actually give this book 3.5 stars, but that is not an option, so it only gets three. While not as good as Angela's Ashes, the second part of Frank McCourt's memoir follows the second part of his life. IT is just as funny and touching and heart wrenching as the first part, but I think that the reason I don't like it as much is simply because of the age. In Angela's Ashes, he ends the book when he is 19, just made his "escape" from Ireland and has the whole world waiting for him. It was very difficult to finish that book and not know what went on, but the promise of something better was there, so it was like a good time that you wanted to continue forever. However, like all good times, eventually they come to an end, and that is what I felt like reading Tis. The promise that the future held came to fruition, but it was almost better in my imagination.
