Wow! Um...just, WOW This book has everything in it: mystery and intrigue, romance and great sexual tension, action and suspense. And lots of sex! D, a big, bad ass hit man being forced to kill Jack, state's witness and former practicing doctor. Well, things don't exactly turn out as planned. In the beginning, I immediately loved Jack because he reminded me a lot of myself. Especially when he had to nurse D back to health and how he always asking D a bunch of questions. D would have went ahead and killed me because I never would have known when to shut my mouth. But somewhere in the middle of all this, I totally fell in love with D. He was such a passionate man and all he needed was Jack to dig in and open up that vault he had sealed tightly shut for so many years. I loved seeing how D slowly opened up and shared little pieces of himself at a time with Jack. It was very endearing and just made me want to reach out and give him a big hug. Jack was right there and able to look past D's rough and tough exterior and see the real man inside. Great book!

Now, I know there are people who would say that it is ungenerous of me to quibble with how Forester presents Horatio's attitudes towards women. 'Siria,' they would say, 'it would be anachronistic for Horatio to show much regard for them!' 'Ah, but imaginary people!' I would reply, 'There is a vast difference between a historically accurate representation of gender relations, and Horatio treating Barbara, Marie et al as meat puppets for him to alternately fuck and angst over!' Blah.

This is a REAL history book. Im pretty upset at myself for not have taken a class with Ronald Takaki while I attended Berkeley. This should be a high school text book. Although there are many truths to people's histories and as the author mention not everyone's histories are presented in this book. If you ever wonder why a group of people are in this land, this is the book to reveal that and much more. This book exposes the truths of the atrocities committed to native people, language, culture and environment. It talks about slave-trade, Irish, women, Chicanos, Chinese, and many more his/her-stories of oppressed groups in U.S. American land.

Fiction. At the tender age of ten, Nicholas Wertheim falls in love with Julia Turrell and never really recovers. This book pushes my button marked doomed childhood romances which we eventually, after much obsession and sulking, overcome. Except, maybe not so much with the overcoming. I read this when it first came out in 1996 and ever since I've thought back on it fondly, if vaguely. The writing is as fantastic as I remember, playful and surprising. The obsession, however, gets a little tedious in the second-half of the book where Nick's wallowing and self-destructive behavior really get out of hand. That definitely could have been shorter, but sometimes you have to sweat the poison out and Nick does, eventually, get better. Not perfect, but functional. This has a bittersweet ending, and though I get the feeling my teenaged self enjoyed the wallowing way more than I did, the book itself is still excellent despite its few rough spots. Be advised: There is some brief sexual contact between brother and sister. They're twins, and it's consensual and mostly just "practice" kissing. It didn't bother me, and, objectively, the kissing's pretty hot. Phillips has a real way with writing bodies and sex -- and there's a lot of it in here -- earthy and desperate. Some guy on the back of this book says, "Max Phillips portrays, perfectly, man reaching for his pants." It's true.

This book reads like it was written by a freshman in high school for her history term paper.

I read this a while ago, but it quickly became one of my favorite books. It's a fun introduction to philosophy.
