** spoiler alert ** The essential question of this book is whether math is invented or discovered. This is the exact topic of the term paper I assign to my 9th grade geometry students at the start of each year, so I was very interested to read it. It is a nice survey of certain key developments in mathematics, especially those that relate to describing the universe in concise mathematical equations. In the end, however, Livio reveals (as he has been avoiding answering the question the entire time) that the question is ill-formed because math is both invented and discovered. This was not a surprise to me because my students have been able to figure this out after just a few weeks of exposure to the axiomatic method. As for the question posed in the title, I'm not sure Livio ever really answered it. But no matter, I enjoyed the book anyway.

** spoiler alert ** Ok, this was a good book, but It was kind of trippy too. Some of the plot content of this book has kind of freaked me out about going to Disneyland...specifically going on It's a Small World. I just don't know if I'll be able to look at the ride the same way again. I mean, I know everyone hates that ride, but I love it...and now it's kind of tainted. Overall a good storyline. The first part is kind of slow. But the plot is good, pretty well thought out. EXCEPT for the simple fact that there would be a LOT more people around Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom at night that would have seen things going on. Cleaning crews alone would add hundreds of people in the park. Anyways...It was a good story, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone planning on attending either Disneyland or WDW Magic Kingdom in the near future.

As a mom, it was still difficult to sympathise with the mother in this story. As morbid as it sounds, I LOVED the ending! It was a stroke of genius!

Nice book, very good to start with if you'd like a starter on the major religions but it does leave a lot out if you are looking for a more in depth overview.

Shrinking Violet was actually an ADORABLE novel... 100% predictable...but hey, it was still fantastic! The shy girl of our story, Tere is horribly and chronically shy- a true shrinking violet. But she slowly opens up with the help of a cute, goth boy Gavin, and her own strength as "Sweet T" on the radio. Tere is funny and this read was relaxing, i don't have a lot of criticisms... EXCEPT (of course) that Tere's mom was totally bitchhyy! i think our author may have exaggerated a bit with her character in making her point about Tere's home life. Other than that, simple. cute. a great read :)
