This book was really intense. I am sad some of the characters died. It made for a very sad book. But, again the fighting scenes were great and it's always nice to have a little bit of romance. I can't wait for the next installment!

This is a monster of a book that literally tries to tell the entire story of Europe from prehistory to modern day, from Ireland to Russia. Granted I'm a history nerd, but I love it. It's engaging and full of interesting asides that shed light on snipets of history I'd never really considered before. I'm only to the Roman Empire, but I'm looking forward to the rest.

I liked this a lot because it even though it was published in 1939 it still reads fresh. The way Chandler spells okay (okey) was a bit odd and I kept reading it as oh key, which doesn't make sense, but here we are. It always feels like the characters are talking really fast for some reason, but we don't have time to goof around fast. There's no gimmick here, Marlowe is a badass p.i. and who is on the case and goes above and beyond the call of duty. The refreshing depiction of L.A. in this book is different from the sun and glitz that I'm used to reading about.
