Yıkarak Yapmak: Anarşist Bir Mimarlık Kuramı İçin Altlık - Uğur Tanyeli TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

I read this for the first time about eight years ago, when my roommate Katie recommended it. She was really moved by the book, and while I enjoyed it, I didn't feel much of an impact. Fast-forward to last wekk, when I decided to pluck it off my bookshelf for a re-read. I don't know what the difference is, precisely, but I thought it was beautiful. I think I'm in more of a position now to gain more from the novel--just more life experience, I suppose, much of which aligns with the plot of the characters. Stegner tells the story of four friends--two couples--who meet early in their academic careers. Larry Morgan and Sid Lang are young English PhDs navigating a depression-era academic landscape at the University of Wisconsin. Their wives--patient, stable Sally Morgan and intense, high-maintenance Charity Lang--become fast friends who talk and laugh and plan the March births of their children together (Sally's first, Charity's third). After a first year of closeness together, the Morgans leave Wisconsin for an eventual job in the publishing industry (Larry is, by this point, a published novelist), but the ties they've formed with the Langs will continue to mold and impact their lives. The underlying narrative of the book is told from a present-day (1970s) perspective, when the Langs and the Morgans reunite to bid Charity farewell as she loses her battle with stomach cancer. Stegner is a master, and I have long appreciated his style and stunning use of language (Angle of Repose, for which he won a Pulitzer, is an epic masterpiece, but my favorite Stegner is probably his book of essays on the American West: Where the Bluebird Sings to the Lemonade Springs). I have a feeling that I could read Crossing to Safety every 10 years for the rest of my life and gain something new and profound from it. It's a novel about the quiet lives of four people whose experience is made perfect through their imperfect relationships with each other.
