Written at least a generation before my time, and from the point of view of women, The Group portrays struggles that every generation faces after graduating from college, though they are resolved with the distinctive flavor of each generation. The book starts with a wedding and ends with a funeral, and in each case there is the search for just the right way of handling the occasion, not too formal and not too Bohemian, with second-guessing from everyone. How will the parents be involved? Is the minister being supportive? What role will each friend play? Similarly, in deciding how lives are set up, there are the choices among styles, to be fashionably materialistic, to stick with affordable common sense, or to stay true to spiritual or political values. The struggles become more acute with respect to children, to breastfeed or bottle-feed, to indulge or to discipline. Often the men play the heavies or the foils in these struggles, but not always, and at least they are portrayed fairly and realistically. The struggles and decisions faced are ultimately the same for everyone, men and women, and the interesting part is how one’s choices irrevocably shape one’s destiny. Also interesting is that the dilemmas of the 1930’s are not much different from those of today. My favorite line was an observation from one of the young women, “Selfish people, she felt, were more fun to be with than unselfish people.” How true, even though they are higher maintenance!

Entertaining, but the story line can be unnecessarily confusing sometimes. One thing I liked about the book is how humans endowed with the ability to foresee the future (or pre-cogs, as they are called) visualize future possibilities at different degrees of clarity, depending on how probable the events are. As time ticks by, some outcomes become more likely and therefore more nitid in the pre-cogs' minds, while others are dumped on the growing pile of impossible outcomes.

This was a little too dry for me though I did end up liking it. C.J. Cherryh writes well and does a really good job in this story creating believable aliens that I came to care about during the story. I guess in the end it was just a bit too slow moving for what I was in the mood for.

I like Asne Siersad, but sometimes her style annoys me slightly. She seems rather preachy, and sometimes contradicts herself. She writes books as a not-so-strict journalist I think. This is an extreemly quick read though.

This was a good read. Franklin's writing is not at all complex but at the same time it is descriptive and the type that makes you want to underline or highlight and then go back to in the future. We discussed it at book club, and while we can always find things to pick apart,everyone liked this one.

I read this for and English class on Literature in Film. Actually, the subtitle of the class is Vision and Power and we explored the themes of vision and power through the medium of film. One aspect was the Holocaust and this book was key to looking at the role different film genres take in telling this story in history.
