I actually did not fall in love with the Harry Potter series with the first book, or the first movie. I think the story was really interesting and easy to read, but the enchanting aspects of it and the humor didn't really start to show until the next few books came out. That said, I still thought this book was highly creative and cute, not to mention a role model for freaks and geeks, which I am. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in being entertained and is not afraid of a little magic.

The next installment in the "Walking Dead" series was good, focusing mostly on the group's recovery after the neighborhood was decimated by the dead. What really stood out to me was the luxury of reminiscing about the past. Not only do you lose electricity, food, shelter, and so many physical things during the apocalypse, but you lose your past as well - because to think about it is to lose your focus and will to live in the present. I'll be reading the next.

Wow! There is so much about this book that can lead to an interesting and controversial discussion. It's the coming-of-age story of Jacob. He has been chosen to be the new Receiver of Memories in his community. He is given the memories by the Giver who holds the memories so that the community can live in Sameness and not have to deal with the memories. But no memories also means no emotions. Jacob sees things he'd rather not. He is no longer satified in the community. He must decide what to do. Creeped me out somewhat at the beginning as I began to look at my life and society and compare. Not so far fetched. Excellent!

I wish I had read this prior to seeing the film as each focused on a different angle. The film focused on the love story while the book was rather an anti-war statement. I recommend both versions.

** spoiler alert ** It was highly unrealistic but interesting none the less. What would you do if every word you said, in the privacy of your own home, could be spied on and put on a website for all your friends and neighbors to read? What would be on there? What would we hear? Who would be hurt? Who would you piss off? This book answers those questions. With one simple website life long friendships are destroyed, workplaces become unbearable and EVERYONE becomes a suspect in your own mind. Families are torn apart, innocent bystanders are hurt and every slight and every insult is broadcast for everyone to know. In the end the website leads to the death of a good man and the temporary imprisonment of another good man. The ending is highly unlikely. I doubt very highly that after the amount of damage done the 'bad guy' would walk away with barely a slap on the wrist. Even if his spying was done out of love. All in all it was a decent book. It kept me guessing and made me think. It is currently on the freebie page for the Nook so I would say it's worth the space it takes up on your Nook. If you want a fast paced mystery with a little morality thrown in have at it (it is listed as a Christian book but I found the God-speak to be pretty limited. There were several references to prayer and God but it wasn't overly preachy...I'm Atheist but I didn't find it too Xian centered. All of the morals are standard 'good behavior' and aren't limited to Xians)

An eloquent and emotional graphic novel. I enjoyed each of the stories which together make the story work as a whole. Not a typical graphic novel, that I've ever read anyway, but that's not a bad thing at all. The narrative is excellent and I found the artwork particularly striking in adding to the overall feeling of each story.

خوشبختانه در این دو سه دهه ی اخیر، بسیاری به نوشتن پرداخته اند و در میان آثار چاپ شده، کارهای قشنگ کم نیست. اما متاسفانه به هزار و یک دلیل، یکی هم دور افتادگی از ایران، خواندن همه ی آنها برایم میسر نشده. از میان بسیاری که خوانده ام، اینها کارهایی ست که بیشتر دوستشان داشته ام. از این مکان از قاضی ربیحاوی/ دیوان سومنات از ابوتراب خسروی / جامه به خوناب از رضا جولایی/ خالو نکیسا، بنات النعش و یوزپلنگ از ایرج صغیری / نیمه ی غایب از حسین سناپور/ پرنده ی من از فریبا وفی/ رنگ کلاغ از فرهاد بردبار/ راز کوچک و داستان های دیگر از فرخنده آقایی/ سیاسنبو از محمدرضا صفدری / سوء قصد به ذات همایونی از رضا جولایی/ سلام خانم جنیفر لوپز از چیستا یثربی و... کسانی مانند شهریار مندنی پور و محسن مخملباف هم بوده اند که بنظر من چند اثرشان خواندنی و ماندنی ست؛ هشتمین روز هفته، سایه های غار، ماه نیمروز و دل دلدادگی از شهریار مندنی پور و "باغ بلور" و چند اثر دیگر از محسن مخملباف که در مجموعه ی آثارش با نام "گنگ خوابدیده" خوانده ام. از آنان که پیش از انقلاب هم می نوشتند، چند کار از جعفر مدرس صادقی؛ "گاوخونی"، "شریک جرم"، و چند اثر از امیر حسن چهلتن؛ "دیگر کسی صدایم نزد" و "تالار آینه" را دوست دارم. برخی هاشان انگار دیگر نمی نویسند، مثل "صفدری" و "صغیری" و چه حیف! شاید هم که نوشته اند و مثل کار خیلی های دیگر در هزار توی تایید و مجوز و غیره و غیره مانده است. از آنجا که برخی از عزیزان "کتابدار گودریدز" متاسفانه بدون داشتن اطلاعات کافی به "ترکیب" عنوان های مشابه می پردازند، در این عمل کلیه ی ملاحظات شخصی از جمله نظرات افراد در مورد کتاب مزبور از بین می رود، و گاه تنها نظر اولی بجای نظرات همه باقی می ماند.

Another of Atwood's futuristic imaginings. Reading it while also very politically active, and in an apocalyptic mood, I could see the plausibility of this fiction. A quick read, but effective.
