I loved this. I want to shout that from the rooftops. I went into this with low expectations, for some reason I expected it to be very movie-like (since the movie IS about to come out). But that wasn't the case. It was very well written. I really appreciated the emotion that the main character, a boy, showed. Typically we don't see that emotion written for a boy. It was refreshing. I know that we'll probably learn what was in the letter in The Power Of Six but I really wish that that had been included in this book. Also, I'm very surprised at how quickly this book was picked up for a movie. Though, once reading it it became obvious that it would make a great movie.

Darwyn Cooke's amazing blending of political allegory and superhero comic history. Set in the late 1950's, superheroes are in decline after being investigated by Joseph McCarthy's House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). With the exception of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman the Golden Age comic heroes have given up the fight. A new generation of heroes is ready to take it up, but can they overcome the paranoia and mistrust of their own government? Honestly, this is a great comic which makes great use of Darwyn Cooke's unique style. It was even made into a great animated movie.

I think I was put off reading this book or watching the movie by the ever present description of the plot. "Man forces his unfaithful wife to accompany him to the heart of a cholera eppidemic" just didn't grab me. A better description of this beautiful book is on the back of the paperback copy I read. "The Painted Veil is a beautifully written affirmation of the human capacity to grow,to change, and to forgive".

i liked this book mainly for the perspective it gave me on depression. i'd recommend it to anyone who knows someone who's clinically depressed, or who has felt depressed themselves.

I gave it 100 pages, and then found myself doing a LOT of skimming. And then I decided that I'm too busy to read boring books, even if maybe it would have gotten better because everyone else thought it was a great book. So I won't be finishing this one.

I thoroughly enjoyed Gaiman's earlier dark fantasy/magical-realism book Neverwhere. To be more specific, whilst I found the universe and characters thoroughly absorbing, and the story certainly gripped me, I wasn't bowled over by the writing. Nothing terrible, just that the overall dialogue and descriptive prose left me a little unsatisfied. In American Gods the writing is certainly not in the way of enjoying the book. The genre is again magical-realism, the story flowing one of those wonderful sci-fi "what if..." ideas. What if immigrants to the new world brought their ancient gods with them -- gods which have been long forgotten and whose place in the modern world has been usurped by the attractions of the new gods: Media, Technology et al. The protagonist is a gruff loner by the name of Shadow, hard boiled, bad ass and thoroughly likeable. The plot proceeds steadily, although in my opinion it didn't really rise to any great heights towards the end of the book, although Shadow alone is more than enough to keep you absorbed. I have a paperback copy that I'd be happy to loan.

Böyle zor bir durumu ele almak için mükemmel pozitif yaklaşımı göstermektedir. Karısı ve çocukları, arkadaşları ve öğrencileri için gösterdiği sevgi beni çok etkiledi. Kitap, durumunuza rağmen iyimser olmayı ve hayat dolu dolu yaşamayı tercih edebileceğinizi hatırlatacak. İnanılmaz bir insandı.
