Book had a few slow parts near the beginning. But the book is fantastic. Not your typical vampire book. Vampires do not talk, are not dress in tuxes, do not sleep in coffins. But the the book leaves too many questions unanswered. Can not wait for the next book (sequel).

A short glimpse into the world of the Dresden Files, through the eyes of Thomas instead of the series standard Harry. The sharp witted style is similar to the main series. I loved getting a different perspective of background events and insights into the world that aren't touched on in the main story. Even though it is short, I found it satisfying. While not essential to the main series, it's definitely worth reading for fans of the series.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. This. Book. Sucked. So. Much. OK, what about this sentence from page 4? "I panicked because Gran didn't know that I was in love with a vampire - nobody knew that - so how was I supposed to explain the fact that the brilliant sunbeams were shattering off his skin into a thousand rainbow shards like he was made of crystal or diamond?" Will I make it through the next 559 pages?? I think I will. But I may need a number of stiff drinks.

It felt like this book had a split personality. It was like reading Russian existentialism... all angst, questions and depression. At first I felt like I was reading an early postmodern novel, then it switched to a depressing existential love story, then a magical fantasy... and finally a depressing Russian Doestoevsky-like novel... oh man. I had expected much from this novel because of all the reviews, but it isn't my cuppa. It IS beautifully written, with rich language and descriptions, for that alone I can say it was okay, maybe more than okay, even literary.

This book was hard for me to read and I ended up skipping big potions of it. It read like a journal to me and a lot of the material was boring to me. That being said when the author was talking about Russia and his job as a spy I think that is was interesting and compelling to read. I liked the glimpse the author gave us into the Russian people and their culture.

I've read a lot of Paul Auster's nonfiction and enjoyed it. His fiction is another matter - this book must have some of the worst dialogue ever, and the scenes feel very forced in general. However, this book contains the phrase "The Eden of her buttocks." Really, though, I should say that it is a page-turner. But it's a page turner because the author withholds a lot of information from the reader until near the end of the book. It's not worth reading it to get to the end of the mystery. Very disconnected and rambling by the end. I'd suggest reading his nonfiction: "The Invention of Solitude."

A little slow to start (ok very slow to start) but once I got into it, a good solid read. Very lulling in it's language, I found myself falling into this kind of trance around Alex's descriptions of the countryside and the history of the characters and their families. Raised a few questions about the relationships between the white and indigenous communities and what "ownership" actually means. Great characters who were easy to like and follow.

Essential reading on centuries of feminist theory, including Dr. Kolmar's brilliant insights into epistemological trends.

I have mixed feelings about this book's existence. It's the fictionalized autobiography of Valentino Achak Deng, a survivor of the Sudanese civil wars and a real person, written by (rightfully) renowned U.S. author Dave Eggers. If you come to the book understanding that and look beyond the book for sources of information, as the author and Deng himself have intended for audiences to do, it's a good thing. But I think it definitely has the potential to be problematic.
