We love the movie based on this book, featuring Neil Patrick Harris. However, the book itself isn't exceptional, but is still a feel good read at Christmas.

Made me laugh out loud and remember how cool I thought it was as a kid when we went to Bishop's buffet to eat -- loved getting a piece of french silk pie. I thought his description of Riverview Amusement Park was a bit harsh, but others who went there as a kid say they vividly remember people also losing it on one of the rides.

It's ok but nothing I am pressed about staying up to read all night. Again I am missing the emotional connection with the characters. The author tried and used words that should have done it but it was a miss for me. One part had it but only for a few lines. I know what is missing for me now. Harper is acting like a punk instead of a strong alpha male. And the author did not take the time to give you any background or back story so that you are not lost if this is the first time you have read a book from this series. Unfortunately that is the case for me because this is the first book I read by this author and I now know I didn't start with the first book. Later on at page 293 I just can't take anymore of this mess of a book. The author for the most part talked about a SKUNK from page 244-274 what in the world. I didn't know you could write that much about a skunk. I can't do no more of this book.

Honestly, I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. I don't necessarily agree with the conclusions about "religion" that were ultimately made, but the journeys/perspectives intrigued me throughout the book. I kept finding that I couldn't wait until the next thread of the story was unravelled, and I thought she articulated very well the inner conflicts of the characters.

Baldacci takes the reader on a what if trip--what if the US had a national lottery and what if it could be fixed. His heroine is a little too good to be true--the rags to riches story, but happier poor and always beautiful, strong, etc., etc. The details about the baby, however, were the worst--he didn't mention a single diaper, and he has an eight-month old content to stay in a baby carrier and have only bottles of milk as food---come on now. However, the story moves at an entertaining, fast clip with a lovable Uncle Charlie and a built in former FBI agent. The bad guy is an interesting character, but Baldacci almost justifies his motives for being evil. And there is a conveniently wealthy, happy ending. Not one of Baldacci's best.

I think I finally understand why a lot people love SEPs' books. I didn't get it at first (back when I read Nobody's baby but mine), but after reading thru Dream a Little Dream and Kiss an Angel, I am happy to announce that I'm jumping aboard the fandom. It's probably the way SEP characters are developed in the plot, they're so realistic that at some point you get aggravated by their behavior at a certain chapter. Rating: 4 In Kiss an Angel. We get to meet Daisy(Theodesia) and Alex who are about to begin their wedded bliss. Well, as blissfully as possible, considering that both characters are somehow forced to marry each other. I really liked how SEP transitioned Daisy's change from a dependent and wimpy girl into a confident and independent woman. The reason why I gave this one 4 stars is because I felt that the book was a little bit similar to Dream a little Dream's settings. But overall, it was a fun book.

It was a good story, and usually I'm not opposed to this old-fashioned way of writing, but still, I feel like this book was exceptionally long-winded and verbose. It began with promise, but the middle third dragged on endlessly, and not a lot was happening. It got a little better again, at the end, but it just took so long to get there. A decent read, but I'd never want to go through it again!

This is a compelling and well written first novel by John Scalzi. The premise follows the universe contains main intelligient races but few habitable planets so the galaxy is at war. After some initial failure but gaining some useful technology the Colonial defense force decideds recruiting the elderly and upgrading them is a better method to fight and win than recruiting teenagers. The story follows on such man, John Perry, as he joins the CDF and find out quite what they mean by signing up and being made fit to fight. Much of the basic plot point and characterization isn't new, but Scalzi takes story elements which are well trodden and make them interesting and most importantly very readable, the story is both entertaining and thought provoking
It was pretty good, but not good enough for me to recommend it. There were some neat turns of phrase and some... interesting characters/plot points, but it was a little too over the top.
