This book collects three novellas in the classic detective noir genre with a futuristic twist. Though, some of the ideas may be more paleofuture. Three things make this work, even though there are moments of "but we don't use moving sidewalks in our major cities!" 1) Our hardboiled detective deals with one type of major crime: organlegging. Long before Repo! The Genetic Opera, there was Gil Hamilton, part of the UN task force that makes sure your spare body parts aren't cannibalized from your neighbor. Hamilton's world is full of medical advances in organ and tissue grafting, so you can imagine the kind of black market that's sprung up around procuring the parts. Like a police show where you only follow a vice cop, or the homicide department, The Long Arm of Gil Hamilton is dedicated to a division specialty. 2) Detective noir plus. Everything a detective does, Hamilton does with futuristic flourish. If noir detectives smoke, he does a cigarette trick with his telekinetic third hand. (A cigarette is about the heaviest thing he can manage.) If noir detectives have loving secretaries, his secretary keeps tabs on him telepathically. If noir detectives run afoul of regular city police, well--something's gotta be constant across space and time. 3) The Encyclopedia Brown wrap up. You know you love it. You come to the end of the story, and you can't wait to see how Encyclopedia Brown (or Sherlock Holmes or Shawn Spencer, etc.) is going to combine all the little clues into an obvious answer. Hamilton has exactly these sorts of revelations, but with clues you shouldn't understand. Except that the science woven through the narrative so well that a conclusion hinging on inertialess star drives is just as clear as any other "smoking gun" detail.

I am a huge Richelle Mead fan. I loved The Vampire Academy Series, Dark Swan Series and after several attempts at The Georgina Kincaid Series by the end it was one of my all-time favourites. So, I had high hopes for spin-off series to The Vampire Academy: Bloodlines. But, unlike the rest of the books by Mead, these ones seem to lack any spunk. They are slow going and take a little effort to get into. This second instalment; The Golden Lily was no exception. If this book hadn't been a Richelle Mead book, I would have given up at chapter three or four. But I have faith in this author, so I kept at it. I like Sydney Sage, our female protagonist. She is intelligent, loyal, forthright, if not just a little too upright and stiff. I am intrigued by the Alchemists and think their background story is interesting. I adore Adrian - who doesn't? - and I love the relationship developing (or not developing) between both Sydney and Adrian in these books. Dimitri Belikov also appears in this book and that additional connection to The Vampire Academy Series is nice. The support characters are also likeable, as were the antagonists. This time facing off against vampire hunters, something Sydney from the Alchemists had never encountered before. So, a great background world which Mead had already established through The Vampire Academy Series, solid, likeable characters and eventually a story plot that made sense. I say eventually, because for the first third to half of this book I was unsure what exactly we were gearing up for. It almost felt like we were just drifting along following the day-to-day goings on of Sydney and her gang. A bit like a Charlaine Harris book. The ending was good enough to evoke some emotions in me, but this only occurred in the last few pages. To wade through the entire story to reach the climax at the end for that heart moving moment was a bit too long. Will I read on in the series? Well, experience has told me (ie The Georgina Kincaid Series) that it is worth sticking with Richelle Mead until the end. The Kincaid Series didn't grab me until book three, I think, so I will give Mead one more go. But please, Richelle, bring back the fast pace adventure and exciting character interaction of your previous novels. Bring back your spunk! I still love this author, I still refuse to give her too poor a score on the NBRS, but this will not be an addition to my Top Reads Bookshelf. Fingers crossed for book three. 6/10: "Good light-weight read, well done."
