Ruby Red is the first in a series about a secret society of time travelers. There is a lot to like about this book -- time traveling, roguishly handsome boys, mystery and intrigue, and fabulous period clothing. If this is your favorite genre, you'll probably like this book. But there are a few things that don't quite work in the book too. The first book introduces a lot of questions but doesn't actually answer a lot of them. The book begins with a scene that clearly hints at a major mystery. I'm pretty sure I know what the mystery is but I wish that Gier cleared it up or resolved it in this book instead of waiting for the next book. My other complaint is one that I've seen on other reviews as well -- Gwen seems young for a 16 1/2 year old girl. She reads more like an intelligent, strong-willed 12 year old but since she's supposed to be an older teen, there's a bit of a disconnect in her characterization. And finally, this first book is very middle grade appropriate. The language, pacing, time travel details, and romantic interests are great for 7th and 8th grade girls. I know well, however, that while the first novel can be fine for middle school, later novels quickly outgrow that sweet spot and plant themselves firmly in high school territory.

not as concise as it should of been -- she needed a stricter editor -- but the content was interesting and made for a great book club discussion

A very eye opening book about people who live in India. I really enjoyed the book and the story was awesome. Minus one star because the book was REALLY long and depressing :(

Another good addition to the Twilight series. Edward is back now in Bella's life. The werewolves and vampires have to join together to protect Bella from a virtual army of newborn vampires and the evil Victoria. Bella and Edward become engaged and break Jacob's heart.

I think I am madly in love with Tucker Case.

A sometimes fun, often touching fairy tale story about Ben, the immature yet indomitable princess, whose obstinate nature is matched by her inner strength and tenacity. Murdock intersperses some fairy tale references for entertainment. Recommended for YA and above, due to some of the misery Princess Benevolence must withstand.

This is a book I've frequently started and thereafter abandoned. The comparisons to 1984 are a bit unfair; they're both dystopic, but Orwell's less melodramatic and more concise -- in fact, his writing is PERFECT. Huxley's craft is decent (readable) and occasionally funny (Social Engineering), but I feel like he's a teenage mind stuck in the body of an adult. The writing is STEREOTYPICALLY male. Also, I've always wondered why we never read this alongside 1984 in school, but it makes sense now: the obscene allusions in this book are more apparent than in 1984. Huxley's a brilliant essayist (particularly when dissecting philosophy), but only a not-shabby novelist.

Really enjoyed this series, but I felt like I really had to pay attention to keep the characters straight. Can't wait for the 1st movie.

I don't want to spoil this book for anyone, but I will just say that there is a real shocker at the end. I love all the books by this author, the way she can write from several points of view at once, and develop all the characters so fully.
This story has a very powerful lesson. It really gives a picture of the attitudes towards race that occurred during World War II. Timothy's accent is a little hard to read, particularly for students, but the exposure to it is important to understand history.
