I loved it! I love how the characters are interwoven, but not in a stupid, predictable way. At least I I didn't think so. A romance story, but also a story of friendship. This is Sarah Addison Allen's 2nd book that I read, and I really loved it. Should be a book club book!

How can one possibly criticize the work of Nadine Gordimer? She's written a dozen novels; won the Nobel Prize for Literature; was a member of the ANC before it was legal; when Nelson Mandela was released from prison, Gordimer was one of the first people he wanted to see. No, one can't knock a writer who has done so much and so well. So i'll just say this--for fans of books written in a dense, restrained, 19th century realistic style.

It is a crazy funny book that it totally unreal...It's hard to think it is actually based around a real life!!! It makes my own drama filled life seem tame, normal, and boring!!!

Set during medieval times, this is a fast paced and exciting adventure story involving a young orphan, Crispin, running for his life. Along the way he meets a large, hairy juggling minstrel known as Bear. Crispin, who is wanting answers about his life, doesn't know whom to trust, but decides to accept Bear's offer of accompaniment and later friendship. Their journey is filled with danger, excitement, uncertainty, and sacrifice. Wonderful book to read with your children. However, the subject and revelation of Crispin's birth father might be offensive to young readers. Caution and discretion suggested.

I loved the TV show Murder, She Wrote. The book was a quick trip down memory lane.

No rating, abandoned after two chapters. Because...it was just so...I could actually hear the sweeping 1960ish musical romance score in the narrative. I kept thinking "Gidget." And sometimes "Bridget Jones." And there are a lot of people who like that sort of thing, and so they'd probably like.

Hauntingly slim and magnificently written account of a holocaust survivor. I've read nearly every book I've ever seen in the genre - astonished that I've never read this. His attitude of questioning his faith and abandonment by his God was quite powerful. I enjoyed the closing, in which he reaffirms his faith many years later. Surely, in so much misery, human nature would cry out at being forsaken. Great reminder to look to the inhumanity in the world today and ensure that we are not similarly blind. Tragic in every way. Especially powerful scene of the hanging of a small boy, and the weeping of all the hardened men forced to watch. Beautifully written.

And here I thought Mormons were just those really cute guys who rang the doorbell... Little did I know that the history of this religious movement was so violent or broad reaching. The book does not paint all Mormons with the same brush, but it does give a less-than-rosey view of perhaps the largest truely "American" made religion. Well worth the read.

Alfred Tennyson is, after Shakespeare and Chaucer, one of the most skilled craftsmen in the English language. He has a way of spinning beautifully memorable lines, such as these from Tithonus: “Far-folded mists, and gleaming halls of morn.” And … “.... Arise And shake the darkness from their loosened manes, And beat the twilight into flakes of fire.” As an avid reader of narrative and dramatic poetry, it’s no surprise that Tennyson is one of my favorite authors. He’s written many memorable poems such as Ulysses, Tithonus, The Holy Grail, St. Simeon Stylites, The Lotos Eaters and Morte d’Arthur. (Parts of In Memoriam are also outstanding.) On the reputation of these works alone, he stands among the greatest English poets. The Norton Critical Edition is an excellent collection of Tennyson’s poems, with helpful footnotes throughout. It does a good job of selecting his best works, and culling the dross. I recommend the poems mentioned above. His epic, Idylls of the King, is an interesting failure. Love or hate poetry, I recommend Tennyson. This book is an excellent starting point.

Yes, it's a well-worn theme, but this is just charming- both text and art.

Mullen'in bunu okurken Kuzeybatı'dan olmadığını biliyordum - çalışmaları David Guterson'ın kitaplarına kanalize ettiği Kuzeybatı ruhundan yoksun ("Karda Düşen Karlar" tüm zamanların favorilerimden biri).
