Uyuyan Güzel - Stephen Cartwright TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

This novel has challenged many of my most closely-held beliefs and, indeed, has altered my views of the world and of humanity. Through the use of soma, bottle-babies and artificial conditioning, the "brave new world" is depicted as a place that utilizes technology to manipulate society. My opinion of science and scientific progress has always been that progress is good for progress's sake; that understanding our environment and knowing how to better tweak it to our preferences is beneficial to humanity. After reading Brave New World, I now realize that the potential for human corruption and misuse of knowledge is far greater than the possibility that technologies will be developed to help civilization. The novel's description of consumerism and industrialization as hugely desirable in society is one that disturbs me too, in large part due to its great similarities to today's economic environment. The prized concept of over-consumption today is evident in Gordon Gecko's famous statement in Wall Street: that "Greed is good." When we observe the problems that this concept creates today -the financial crisis that has only three years ago crippled the American and global economies, the environmental problems caused by over use of energy and material resources - we can see that a future where this near-worship of over-production, where mending is considered a horrible act, could mean the demise of humankind. Coupled with the fact that humans are intrinsically greedy and constantly desire for more, and thus that the "ending is better than mending" philosophy could very probably end up being one that humanity observes in future, there seems to be a very poor outlook for the society of tomorrow. Most importantly, however, the novel discusses happiness and truth, and how they cannot coexist. Though I have, in the past, always considered happiness to be the ultimate goal in life, I now see this is not the case. The old maxim that "ignorance is bliss" is only too true, but I for one despise ignorance. The quest for truth must never be abandoned if we are to preserve our humanity. In addition, happiness without sadness is meaningless. Much as light cannot exist without the dark, joy cannot exist without pain. As pain becomes increasingly reduced by all-controlling powers, it becomes more difficult to find something to contrast with happiness. As the contrast between these emotions becomes reduced, joy becomes bland and is empty, hollow; in turn, therefore, human emotions become trivial. The novel's portrayal of themes relating to society, economics, philosophy, politics, and the notion of "humanity" has opened my mind to a new, significantly darker and more cynical, understanding of our world and where our actions may lead us.
