This is probably my favorite book from this author. The plot is not quite realistic, but it is so incredibly funny that you don't really think about that until after you finish the book. Stephen Bly is an excellent writer with the unique ability to be funny in almost every line.

this wasn't my favorite ann patchett, but i enjoyed it. mostly. at times, patchett used foreshadow in a manner that was distracting, making me wonder if using the device was a good idea. some aspects of character development were also questionable; in one case, i felt that the story would have survived without a particular character. but patchett is a lovely writer, and this novel didn't turn me off from reading more. while i didn't experience a feeling of loss after finishing it, i never considered stopping mid-book.

This book was ok. Not my normal style and I wasn't really into the language.

I was not plannning on re-reading this book this year. However, I had a very boring and quiet shift in work one day and in that particular instance, we’re allowed to bring books to read in- as long as we serve customers promptly. With Stardust only being around 200 pages, I decided to take it with me as I’d probably finish it during the shift- and that is exactly what I did. I first read Stardust, after I’d seen the movie which came out in 2007 (one of my favourite films FYI), this was before I’d gotten back into reading, so I think this book is what made me wish I were an avid reader again. My copy is the version with the movie poster on…which I don’t hate, but don’t exactly love either (all my other Gaimans match. ) As soon as you open the book, Gaiman is a master story-teller. He describes the sleepy village of Wall and the not so sleepy land of Fae beyond the Wall which the village is named for. Gaiman brings together a bright and colourful world through every sense as he describes the rules of Fae. As I re-read it, I was immediately reminded of his short story in Fragile Things named “Instructions” which…well it does exactly what is said on the tin- it tells you how to act should you stumble across a Fae realm or Fairytale-ish happening, with rules reminiscent of tales of Grimm such as “Remember your name”, “Favors will be returned, debts will be repaid” and “Ride the wise eagle (You shall not fall)”. I also loved the story told about the mountains, which stretch all across the length of the Fae-land, where they formed thousands of years ago, when a giant grew too tired from his massive size to move any more and so lay down, and thus the mountains were formed. This story is not unlike ones my dad used to tell my sister and I as we went for long drives up and down the english countryside as little kids on family trips, so it resonated with me and made me smile a lot. Just as I recommend this poem to you if you are a fan of fairytales, I recommend Stardust, which is aptly described as “the fairytale that won’t behave”. Stardust follows multiple perspectives, from the young male hero of Tristran Thorne, to the battling Seven Brothers (or you know…technically three, since four are dead), who are murdering each other in an attempt to be the final winner of the Throne of Stormhold in Fae, and of course, the witches, who are chasing the fallen Star, like Thorne but for different and more sinister reasons. Full of humour, adventure, bravery and magic, Stardust is thoroughly enjoyable. This is also one of the few times where, in my opinion, the film is just as good as the book, if not maybe even better- so I recommend you watch that too if you haven’t already! **** For more of my reviews, please visit TheBookHeap http://thebookheap.wordpress.com/

This is a good novel for a teen/tween who is having trouble communicating with their parents. It follows a high school girl and her friend through their daily activities and crushes and gets you involved with the characters, and you learn that one girl's father is still mourning the loss of his wife while ignoring the girl and the other girl's mother is a recently divorced "man-hater". The book deals with their problems and how they unsuccessfully try to solve them before they eventually open up and learn that communicating directly is best for everyone.

This book went so fast - ALvarez has a great grip on pacing, and I just wanted to keep reading. That said, a lot of the book was forgettable, there was no real light shed on the emotional turbulence involved in trying to adjust to a new culture... at least I thought so. I was sort of annoyed with the upper-class-only view that she showed, I mean, basically the girls went from being princesses in one country to foreign princesses in another. The best parts were the alarmingly personal parts, most memorably, the parts about sex and body issues - I thought the book could have taken both of these issues further, since they clearly affected several of the characters very seriously. Those problems of adaptation seemed to be edited out as soon as they were eluded to... I dunno, those parts were so captivating and I wanted more. The end part, when the girls are young and the father has to hide in the secret compartment and all that... that was great too. even though you clearly know he makes it to America, I still felt my heart beating. That shows truly powerful suspense, my friends.

I was dismayed when I figured out a primary setting would be high school. I kept reading because I really enjoyed the first two books of Diana Tregard. I may enjoy Buffy tv by Joss Whedon, but I don't usually read "teenage angst paranomals"... no offense to those who do. To my surprise the characters came to life for me. Supporting cast was well written and main characters evolved. Some of those characters happened to be teenagers. A big tribute to Mercedes writing style. The book remained honest in that the good guys weren't perfect. The bad guy was hate-able. Previous characters from earlier books were introduced. I was happy to see them. However, they supported the story "at hand." You weren't lost, if you forgot a detail from earlier works.

Although it's been a very long time since I've read this book, it was a fantastic book but VERY slow paced & it was kind of annoying how tired my eyes got from no one talking for such a long period of time.
