I'm finding it troublesome to finish this book. Therefore, Tigerheart is currently on hold, while I read something more interesting.

What a terrific book! I was, at first, a little apprehensive of the ranting style but warmed up to it quickly and enjoyed it thoroughly.

This book changed me in a way no other piece of literature quite has. C.S. Lewis, of course, is a master of allegory and the comments he makes about religion, the universe, and our roles on Earth are beautiful. There's something more to it, though, that I think may be hard to detect if you don't read it at the right time. Lewis subtley addresses struggle and what struggle is. I highly recomment this book - I keep it on my desk at all times. My favorite quote: "You are guilty of no evil...except a little fearfulness. For that, the journey you go on is your pain, and perhaps your cure; for you must be either mad or brave before it is ended."

Despite numerous positive reviews, I'm going to join the ranks of those that don't like this book. I think that Heller tries too hard, and I'm tired of reading the same joke over and over and over again. Because I could not find a discernible plotline by page 100, I decided there were other books I'd rather read more. However, I think that if I'm in the mood for it, reading a chapter at a time (as a short essay, rather than part of a larger plotless whole) might be the way to do it.

RATED R for sexual content and violence. Published by Simon Pulse, I suspect this was chosen because it would get young adult readers' attention. Yes, it does. Can I put this book in the hands of one of my students without a warning about some of its content? No. Do I realize some of my students would gobble this up? Yes. Once I got past the "soft porn" descriptions of sexual encounters, there was a plot of teen lovers in way over their heads and out of control....Lots of angst...but real life terrible, horrible, no good, very bad things were going on...not only in their world, but in their greater community, with greed, graft and corruption. What a mess. I read the whole thing. A tragedy, for sure.

I am the king of the pool.
I spent much of the book actively disliking it, but I think in the end I'm at peace with the plot and even the characters. Taut and chilling, but as raw a Western as you could like. An interesting companion piece to the Sisters Brothers, the last Western I read. Oh George, you poor dear. Oh Phil, you repressed and evil soul. Much to think about, in this one.

** spoiler alert ** The Jack Reacher series was recommended to me by a couple of people and was also referenced in a book that I had just finished reading, so I thought I’d better check it out. I read book #1 in the series and, although it was pretty fast paced, thought it was like reading an old Steven Segal movie. I thought maybe the books get better as they go along, so I skipped forward to 61 Hours: Jack Reacher # 14. It was so hard to convince myself not to quit the book 1/3 of the way in… then ½ way in… then 2/3 of the way in. It took me almost three weeks to finish the damn thing because it just couldn’t hold my interest. Winter is cold in South Dakota. There’s lots of snow. Lots of down parkas. Cold wind that hurts your face. It’s cold. There’s snow. Jack Reacher is a mysterious super tough, super cool drifter. Child reiterates at least 50 pages of the same descriptions as the previous Reacher book. I guess I can assume this description is repeated in every book of the series? Blah. It’s cold. Very cold. Beyond that, the plot seemed slow and predictable, and had almost no depth or complexity. I knew Holland was the killer. I knew Reacher was going to kill Holland and Plato at the end. The pseudo-romance between Reacher and Susan just seemed out of place and kind of stupid, really. And the ending was a huge disappointment. A one-dimensional plot featuring one-dimensional characters. Blah. I sure hope Reacher was able to return Kim’s parka.

This is a hard book to review. Besides the fact that it's over 1400 pages and took me over a month to read... it's Diana Gabaldon. She writes fascinating accounts of history, trivia, mythology, a great love story, science fiction and people with great detail. In some places I wanted to hurry through the details and get to the heart of the story, and other places I savored every word. That's the beauty of her writing, you have to read every word, absorb every detail because it will come back (maybe 700 pages later, but it does come back) and it has some importance. I also love the fact that she doesn't waste time with back story, she throws you right into the action where the last book left off. She repeats a few of the important details, but for the most part lets the reader read between the lines or call upon their own memory of the previous books.

Crazy good short stories that made me think of a more approachable and funnier Lydia Davis, by my new Facebook friend and fellow NU alum Sara Levine. Can't wait to check out her upcoming novel! :)

Bunu Minnesota'da bir kanoda okuduğumu ve çok eğlenerek Josh'a yüksek sesle pasaj okumak zorunda kaldığımı hatırlıyorum. Vintage Bryson.
