I did some research on his writing style and learned that it's categorized as, "biblical" which I found interesting. It made me think twice about the sentence structure which I first took as too "simplistic." I found myself entranced by the idea of a post-apocalyptic earth and the loving bond between father and son something we can all strive for in our intimate relationships. I gave this book a 3 rating because I felt I had to fill in some of the blanks of the story by reading reviews of it when I finished the book.

I am really enjoying this book. It is written in small digestible chunks, and although it is somewhat intense material to engage with originally (it is chanelled from a collective group of beings named Abraham, it is very applicable and has helped me to make some shifts mentally that feel great in my life. One of their arguments is that something feeling good is evidence of its being in line with who you are. That is advice I can certainly connect with. Very clear and easy to accept. This is one of those books where the author let facts get in the way of a good story. It's based on the true crime story of the murder of Charlie Wall in 1955. Wall was a local legend in Tampa and a retired gangster who was found in his home after suffering a brutal beating and getting his throat cut. This historical fiction takes us through the investigation and how it involved local gangsters, the Sicilian Mafia, newspapermen, crooked cops, movie stars, Cubans and Cuban exiles like an idealistic lawyer named Fidel Castro. Ace Atkins used a couple of composite characters involved with the Wall murder to describe a bygone era, and it’s very well researched. Unfortunately, the Wall murder was never officially solved and Atkins sticks close enough to real story that it comes across more as a chaotic look at a bunch of eccentric characters rather than a coherent storyline. I’m not sure why journalist Atkins didn’t just write a non-fiction account rather than going the historical fiction route if he didn’t want to break away from the real story. As a bonus on this, I listened to the audio version which included Atkins talking about how he got interested in and researched this story as well as a few recollections from some of the people who were actually involved.

Ender's Game was so long ago for me that I'd forgotten how much fun it was to read. Bean's story equally kicks ass, although if you've read Ender's Game already this one doesn't have as much wow factor.

When I was 16 I thought I was going mad. This book got me thru a very hard time and had a profound effect on me. I can still find solace in it now. Even if you haven't suffered from anxiety, depression or mania it is a compelling, honest and very moving account. A great read.

For me, a few aspects if the end kept this book from getting 5 stars, but I thought it was an excellent book. I even cried telling my husband about it after reading it and thought about it a lot since. Not an easy subject, but well worth a read.
