I got the heavyweight 3.5 lbs hardcover version and fo sho this book will kick your ass to some extrasolar planets. Here's a video of Robert Fisk on Democracy Now, March 2007: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhKNGn...

This is a great book! The tension mounts as the reader ponders with Zero, how will that number make itself count? The minimalist illustrations (numbers in different colors) are still very expressive. I think the most brilliant thing about this book is that it makes the reader try to solve the dilemma that Zero faces and really brings home just how valuable a digit zero is. The side lessons of how to be supportive to a suffering number were great, too. Seven is a good little number. 8 and 9 try to problem solve, too. This is a very clever, sweet book that makes numbers personal and interesting. Excellent for teaching a math concept to a non-math oriented brain. Hooray!

Beautifully written. A black girl's memoir of white flight. (Ragusa spends early years with black grandmother in Harlem before she moves with her Italian American family to suburban New Jersey.) Also serves as a kind of history of Harlem when Italian immigrants and African Americans were still neighbors. (Although they are very different books, in this regard it recalls Piri Thomas's Down These Mean Streets.) Ragusa is also a gifted filmmaker. I've seen two of her short experimental documentaries, "Fuori/Outside" and "Passing," and I recommend them both, esp. if you have an interest in black nonfiction film/video.

Want a perfect YA book for the summer? REUNITED is it!!!!! The Pea Pod ( a pea green 1976 VW camper van) houses three ex-best friends, on a less than ideal, two thousand mile road trip to go back in time and see a one-time only reunion concert for their favorite middle school band, Level3. But sometimes, things that are less than ideal have a way of being the best things that ever happened. Take a ride with Alice, Summer and Tiernan--you won't regret it.

This was a real "wasted potential" book. The basic idea was really kind of cool - a dragon has been lying dormant beneath an English village for centuries, and periodically people will stumble close to its lair and receive the "gifts of the dragon" (the ability to see auras, pyrokinesis, flight, and telepathy, abilities which manifest themselves gradually). And now the dragon is going to be set free, which sounds very exciting. The book suffers from so many technical problems that it's hard to enjoy it, though. He has major issues with shifting POV, the characters are 2-dimensional, and the pacing is off. Add to that the fact that there are only two female characters and they're both extremely passive, and I wasn't really a happy camper. I would recommend picking up the Bartimaus Trilogy, but steering clear of Buried Fire. This is very much an early novel, before he and his editors really worked things out.

The best sci-fi ever !! With an icing of comedy. Must read.
