So I got this book free in a goody bag from a writing conference I attended for romance writers. And, shockingly, GoodReads did not have this assumed bodice-ripper in its library! I am the first to admit to reading it! Sue me. I love a good romance now and again, and I thought this one was pretty good. It's no Gentle Rogue, of course, but let's get real - what is? I liked the spy angle the story had, wished there was more sex, though. How's THAT for a smut book review? NOT ENOUGH SEX, PEOPLE! IT NEEDED MORE HOT SEX ACTION!

Probably the most underestimated of Atwood's novels, The Penelopiad is full of beautiful insights and modern wit set against the backdrop of a well known story. The classic re-writing a well loved story from another's point of view has, in my opinion never been done better. The characters you were taught about at school re-emerge, changed by rumour and circumstance and the myths you thought you knew must be reevaluated. Absolutely love the modern feminist twists, the subtle knowing of Penelope's character and the idea that bitchy comments transcend this world.

A great piece, especially for its time. I read it as part of course material, but enjoyed it more than some of the other works of the same era. Some of the descriptions were surprisingly grotesque; I assumed they might be a bit watered down due to the era in which this was written - but this is definitely something everyone should read.

These short stories and the illustrations are so beautiful and touching. This is a quick read, but I highly recommend it! My favorites are the stories about the man in the diving bell and the backyard missiles. But all were great.

I loved "Memoirs of a Geisha" so much that I wanted to find out more about the lives of real Geishas. I remember enjoying the book while I was reading it, but nothing has stuck with me.

I absolutely loved Chris Cleaves' first book, Little Bee (if you haven't read it yet you should). So I bought this book expecting to be taken on the same fascinating emotional journey I went through with his previous novel. Unfortunately I was left disappointed. I love the concept of this novel, but I can't stand the protagonist, making it impossible for me to sympathize with her. I don't mind sad stories about depressed characters, but every tragic story needs a silver lining. Otherwise they just become too oppressive and unbearable. I failed to find that ray of hope in this novel, making it difficult to get through more than a few pages at a time. The first 6 paragraphs were the best part of the novel. The rest is just a let down. It should have only taken me a day to read this, instead it took me one whole unhappy week!

I dont think I have ever gone without "star rating" a book, but there is no possible way to rate this book on a scale of 1 to 5. I dont even know if I enjoyed this book or not. I admire the author for putting all of her fears and worries on a page. I have lost someone very close to me before (not a spouse, but a very close friend) and her feelings resonated with me. But then her stubbornness to actually GRIEVE just angered me. Though we all grieve in different ways, I felt like her refusal to cancel any classes (she is/was a college professor) or speaking engagements was, in a way, disrespectful towards the loss of her husband. And not that it makes it any less of a loss, but her husband was SEVENTY EIGHT. This book read as if he was THIRTY EIGHT. (She also got remarried a year after her first husband passed... which seemed to bother most reviewers- professional and or otherwise. Once again, everyone grieves in different ways for different periods of time, and I have no right to judge her.) To sum it up: I judged her pretty harshly for what she wrote in this book, which I shouldn't have and I appreciate her capturing the grief one feels after an unexpected loss. That's all I've got...

Once again I love Chelsea Handler. This book is a good comedy but I liked My Horizontal Life better.
