Eh, definitely a great premise, but I feel like old Bill Burroughs just doesn't pull it off this time around. Really in the end, the whole thing just seems like a mess. Don't get me wrong -- I don't have a problem with the fact that there is a non-linear storyline, or that almost all of the characters are homosexual drug addicts. It's just that all of those elements are also at the forefront of the second novel of the same trilogy (Place of the Dead Roads), and that instance I feels like he succeeds remarkably in a similarly ambitious experiment. Still, there is some great writing here...Burroughs is naturally talented enough to just blow you away with even the most fragmented ideas and passages. I think if this novel were arranged differently, and had some stuff added and subtracted, we might really have a great work on our hands. It is perhaps worth reading just to see on paper Burroughs' and Brion Gysin's theory on the origins of the white race (that it was an albino hybrid race which mutated out of an explosion or meteor blast in the Gobi desert back in ancient times). ***update, 8/2008: I'm changing my review from two to four stars after I thought about it some more. I was way too harsh in my first response and actually this, like any other Burroughs, is some of the best shit out there. Thanks to all the Goodreads members who popped in to rattle me cage a bit on this one!***

I really like David Nicholls style of writing. This book has such a unique concept. Each chapter is a different year on the same day and follows the relationship between two people over 20 years. It's written so wonderfully that you feel like you've been following everyday of these people's lives, not just one day a year. I read a review that said the ending was predictable. I totally disagree. I was not anticipating the ending at all. In fact, I kind of wanted to change the ending. I also love this style of storytelling where you aren't given all the facts up front. You discover more of the story as you go. I look forward to reading more from the author.

clever and enjoyable, but a bit disappointing, expected more and the ending was a bit of a let down

Many think, including my partner, that Hoot is a book meant for children. I disagree. The messages in there, like the rest of Hiaasen's books are to do with the environment, humanity and getting along. And one can never be too old to learn these lessons again. It begins with a simple incident in a school bus, where Dana Matherson, a school bully, is troubling a new kid in school - Roy. Roy has moved to a new town and is just getting used to the teachers and hot plains of Florida when he notices a wierd boy who runs barefoot and lives in a forest like area at the edge of a golf course. Add a new Pancake chain store opening in Coconut Grove and you've got a wonderful story with owls, alligators, snakes, soccer playing-intimidating girls and a curious police officer. I enjoyed Hoot so much that it had me hooked till the very last page. It sort of reminded me of Sick Puppy. Maybe it is a smaller scale version of the eternal story of people ruining natural habitats to build corporate chains, but the characters and incidents are so well written that they never assume pompous proportions. Served in just the right doses, with a little bit thrown your way to satisfy your curiosity every few pages, Hoot is a delight.

What a sweet little book. It gives a different perspective of the bathtub. The illustrations are beautiful and fun. I think it is a great read aloud and notice all the little details kind of book. Plus, I got to meet the author, Bob Logan, at a dinner for children's literacy. He not only signed, but drew a little something in each person's book, all while carrying on a conversation. Amazing! p.s. I read this book before the catastrophic tsunami hit Japan. Maybe it isn't something you want to read right before bed, especially if your children are at all aware of what happened.

I loved the concept of this book, but the political undertone was actually pretty heavy - I think some of it could have been edited. Still loved it! And Gregory Maguire is a brilliant writer. I highly recommend attending the musical after reading the book - it's amazing!!
