This is the second time I've tried to read this book. The first time, I just couldn't get into it. But it's been mentioned in a bunch of writing books as a good example, so I gave it another shot. This time I got much more into the story, and wasn't bogged down with the writing. Not heavy on dialogue, and the plot definitely meanders, but I really enjoyed it overall. It's odd when a book is this long but you wish there was another few hundred pages to go when you're done. It seemed like the story was just starting, rather than finishing up, which is kind of cool feeling to have when you finish something.

** spoiler alert ** I thought this book was really interesting because it was in a time when people didn't know much about the ocean. They didn't know what the octopus was. Some didn't even think there was a bottom of the sea.

For August Category Challenge! This isn't at all what I expected. It's like I read the blurb from a totally different story. I really had a completely different summary in my head. The pace I the beginning is pretty quick. Someone in a review mentioned that the world building was very fast, and I definitely agree with that assessment. There was quite a bit of confusion as I worked through the world's language. The middle was a little slow but the ending came on like gangbusters. I did feel a little like there were two or maybe three endings, but much better that than something quick and unfulfilling. I've had this book on my GR shelves for quite a long time. I'm so glad that I finally made time for it, I can't wait to move forward in the series, but I still have three more books in my August challenge and a BINGO game to start. I guess I'll have to get reading so I can dive back into this world.

Very good historical mystery / thriller. The writing is vivid and the plot is intricate. I'm surprised we haven't seen a film version of this yet, given the cinematic storyline and unique characters.
