Even Stephen King hasn't made up-state Main this creepy. Drug-popping, alcoholic Cass Neary made herself famous by documenting the seedy side of the 80's punk movement. Fascinated by death, Cass photographed the bodies of junkies and other unfortunates that she found lying in the back alleys of New York City. But scorning her success, Cass turns her back on fame and foture and, twenty years later, finds herself working part-time in a stockroom. When she gets the chance to do a photo shoot of a woman who is not only a living legend in the world of art and photography, but Cass's idol as well, Cass leaves NYC to venture out to the rugged Maine coast. What Cass finds there, however, are the bizarre remnants of a hippie commune gone bad, a manhunt for a missing teenager, and a terrifying collection of photographs. This is, hands down, the scariest book I've read in a very long time. Hand's books are always fraught with raw emotion, but she has outdone herself this time. Cass Neary is not a likable character by any standard, yet Hand has managed to make her a heroine to root for. The intensity of the book carried me along to the very last page. At times the book is a traumatic read (the graphic depictions of the punk culture as well as the deteriorating mental state of Cass are at times nearly unbearable) but it is a masterfully-told tale, full of achingly beautiful description. I highly recommend adding this book to your 'must-read' list!

Came from nowhere. Stayed focused on his passion for football. Have to admire his determination and tactical skill.

The struggle between nature and civilization. How do human beings maintain true freedom in a world whose man-made structures take away freedoms? I really liked this lone cowboy story. Abbey has a good sense to make the story flow along. At the end it seemed like Burns had no way to escape, his plight was hopeless, but he made it to freedom, only to be mowed down later by another threat of our modern civilization. Nature and civilization - can they coexist?

It started out so nicely and then just sort of fizzled out. However, there was a lot of good information in the book.

hmm... i liked the tone of the book, the detached, analytic description of mr jensen's weirdness and view of life. i'm not sure what to make of the content..... it started out pretty interesting, talking about how he always just was different, has always been so clueless about life, etc. but towards the end, when it suddenly talks forever about media and how they shape our perceptions blablabla, i really thought this book might have been written sometime in the 80s when people started getting aware of media influences (is that so? i dont know, really, i'd just guess it was in the 80s. but whenever it was - i am sure that by now we really *are* all aware of it; so what exactly was the point?! maybe there was none, since even mr. jensen himself points out that everybody already knew all this. well, i can appreciate irony like this, but i still dont want to read through pages and pages of pointless stuff, sorry.) overall, interesting concept, decent enough writing, but in the end the content really did not convince me at all.

I'm not a fan of boxing. But I guess I got sick of being in the pub and listening to men go on and on about about Muhammad Bloody Ali for hours. I mean all he did was biff people right? Err no. I was probably lucky in picking up this book. There are probably a dozen biographies about Ali but this one is fabulous, I could hardly put it down. Did I mention that I wasn't a fan of boxing. I'm still not. But I'm now definitely a fan of Muhammad Ali. He is beautiful, he is a legend and he has helped shape modern times.
