This came highly recommended by a friend, but didn't quite do it for me. Short stories about inhabitants of a dying outback community, linked by the idea that one of them is writing them as a book for the world's last reader. The feminist morals were too predictably pointed, the male baddies too unrelievedly crass. Glum and, in the end, uninvolving. Glad I read it though.

The last few books from Manfredi have been very disappointing. And this one is particularly so. He writes a lot better when it's about actual historical events. None of his 'modern day' thrillers are in the same league. Maybe the original in Italian is better, but certainly the translator of his last few books has been very ordinary. There are a lot of strange and disjointed sections in The Ancient Curse, and I suspect it has to do with the quality of the translator.

Larry, a mechanic, lives a solitary existence, never able to rise above the whispers of suspicion. Silas has returned as a constable. He and Larry have no reason to cross paths until another girl disappears and Larry is blamed again. And now the two men who once called each other friend are forced to confront the past they've buried and ignored for decades. I really enjoyed this book.
