My favorite type of book is the true stories of ordinary people thrust into extraordinary situations. This is a prime example and an extremely well-written one.

I read just so that I would know what people meant when they said a situation was a Catch-22. So now I know...and I got to read a really good book in the process.

I need to clarify my three-star rating. This book is simply a collection of the "Still Bushed," "Worst Persons," "Quick Comments," and "Special Comments" from Countdown on MSNBC for the year and a half following the 2008 election. If you are a regular watcher of this show, this book will be more a trip down memory lane rather than anything new. It can still be an interesting read, but ultimately it was just a rehash of what I had already watched before. Hence the three-star rating. This is probably mostly geared towards diehard fans or people who had not watched these shows before. Just be warned.

I really enjoyed this. Dorothy Koomson has an easy reading style but which makes you think about the subject. Think Jodie Picoult but maybe not quite as researched. A fabulous read and now looking for more by her.

I realized I had been completely unaware of the things happening in Herzegovina-Bosnia after I read the book. It was sad to learn what happened.

** spoiler alert ** I thought this was a very informative book for my 8-year-old to learn more about his teeth. My 4-year-old sat through some of it but he was a little bored. The book talks about . . . . Animals and their teeth. It has 10 animals (dog, cat, croc, rat, horse, pig, wild pig, snake, elephant, walrus, and a duck) and gives a brief description of each one (When a crocodile's mouth is closed, its teeth are on the outside). The timeline of your teeth from before birth to age 13. The inside of a tooth. What it's like to lose your first tooth and what other countries do when they lose a tooth (In Greece, India, and China, kids throw lost teeth over the roofs of their homes.) Different permanent teeth (incisors, canines, bicuspids, molars). Tooth decay. How to brush properly (in circles, not up and down). When and how to floss. What will happen during a routine dental check-up. What to eat to keep your teeth healthy. Steps to take if you have a toothache, knocked-out permanent tooth, broken tooth or bleeding gums. It recapped with a list of things to do, and not to do.

Right from the start you know it's going to end badly. But it's one thing for someone to tell you so and another thing to feel it deep down in your gut, with every beat of your heart and every turn of the page. The story is told from the alternating characters perspective. Laura the reluctant farmwife, her husband Henry, his brother Jamie damaged WWII bomber pilot, and then husband and wife black sharecroppers Hap and Florence, and finally their son Ronsel a retuned WWII tanker hero. Jamie's relationships with Ronsel and Laura bring the impending disaster to a head. Hillary Jordan's writing is beautiful. I felt that I was standing right there with the characters as the events were unfolding. I highlighted more passages in this book than ever before. Two of my favorites are from the beginning of the book and both from Laura.... "The world was on the other side of that bridge, the world of light bulbs and paved roads and shirts that stayed white. When the river rose, the world was lost to us and we to it."..."Beginnings are elusive things. Just when you think you have hold of one, you look back and see another, earlier beginning, and an earlier one before that." Two more from the end of the book are from Jaime and Ronsel..."Sometimes it's necessary to do wrong. Sometimes it's the only way to make things right. Any God who doesn't understand that can go *$#^ Himself." ...."That's the ending we want, you and me both. I'll grant you it's unlikely, but it is possible." All of these bring you straight to the essence of these characters. I wish I could write a more eloquent review but I just don't have the words. I can't wait to try something else written by Hillary Jordan.

I never thought I would say a book about typeface was a page turner but this was a very enjoyable read. Well written for someone who doesn’t know the difference between Futura and Comic Sans, and also written where a person with typeface knowledge would enjoy it as well. I especially enjoyed the "Font Breaks" in between certain chapters that gave a little more insight in the developers of the typeface as well as the fonts themselves. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick easy and educational read.
