What a lovely story about sharing! I love the tzedakah concept.

Usually novelizations of movies are not as good as the movies themselves. This is certainly true here. The Star Wars movie is fantastic; but it loses a lot when transferred to print.

This made me laugh out loud numerous times, which is pretty impressive given that I do most of my reading on public transportation. It got a bit rambling at times but, on the whole, I would recommend it. It's a wry, funny, thoughtful look back at the author's very interesting upbringing and family.

Interesting, but I mostly skimmed the last half of the book.

3.5 stars, creeping up to 4 stars This book has been sitting on my shelf since its release. I skipped to the end, saw when the second book of the series would release, and promptly reshelved because I knew I wouldn't remember the plot of this book sufficiently enough to read and enjoy the second book. This was both good and bad: good because I didn't have to wait long to read the second book, Never a Gentleman; and bad because I cannot believe I let such a good book just sit there without cracking the spine! Olivia has secrets, oh, does she have secrets. They start to cave in on her almost immediately, which makes for an excellent suspense plot as the reader attempts to sort out what may be truth and what may be fiction. One point utterly shocked the heck out of me. I'm not sure how I didn't see it coming, but Olivia is a skilled and convincing liar. Along the way, we're introduced to Grace Fairchild (heroine of Never a Gentleman), who grew up all over the world, thanks to her father's various military campaigns, Lady Kate Gilbey (heroine of Always a Temptress), a "fallen" duchess, Bea, Lady Kate's companion, and various members of Drake's Rakes. This trilogy should have been called "The Graces" rather than Drake's Rakes; Lady Kate even makes a joke that she, Olivia and Grace all have 'grace' in their names. I really was sorry to see Barely a Lady end. Olivia, for all her necessary deceptions, is a strong and capable heroine, as Grace realizes when they go in search of Grace's father on the battlefield. I also liked that the historical timeline took place during the Napoleonic wars. I cannot wait to read the remaining novels in this trilogy, and I also hope there will be more to come.

On Chisel Beach is the story of a bride and groom on their disastrous wedding night. Florence and Edward believe themselves to be deeply in love with each other, but this is an uncomplicated masking for a very complicated reality. On their wedding night both are virgins. Florence is terrified of physical contact. Edward, whom Florence does not know is a virgin, is worried that he won't be able to contain himself once they move towards consummation. The entire evening goes terribly wrong when Florence attempts to hide her fears and brave through the sexual encounter and Edward's fears are realized in a manner that thoroughly terrifies Florence. After an awkward and hurtful exchange between the two on the beach, Florence leaves and Edward lets her. In his typical fashion, Ian McEwan weaves the pasts of these two characters into the plot through the seamless incorporation of flashbacks. His emphasis on detail is, as always, beautiful and balanced. I felt very uncomfortable through much of the story, yet compelled to see that uncomfortableness through to the very end. Thus, I read the book in less than a day.

I think books like these are haunting because they bring up social issues that people want to believe have been laid to rest in our modern society. The problem is, they have not been laid to rest and I believe Ms. Morrison knew in her heart that these issues would never completely die. There would always be a child or a grown woman who believed she would be pretty if only she had blue/green/grey eyes or blonde hair or lighter skin. The standard of beauty is more accepting now but it's still pretty focused on White beauty and that is a problem for young Black girls. Take Disney for example... besides China Anne McClain, is there another child on the entire station that young Black girls could look up to and say wow, she's beautiful and she looks like me? NO. But there are plenty of White girls who play roles of the pretty, snobby, better than you school girl that reinforce the image of "if it's White then it's Right". We can deny it, fight it, and ignore it but this dilemma still exists and there are hundreds, maybe even thousands of Pecolas in the world, still. Google a study done in the 70's where Black children are shown a White baby doll and a Black baby doll and then asked which one was prettier. They all said the White one was. Tell me that isn't a problem and I will show you a fool.

I was in the airport, waiting for my flight to board back to New York, as our month long trip through the Philippines and Thailand was ending. It was my first trip to Asia, and my interest in all things Eastern had grown enormously. So I browsed the mostly magazine store in Narita, and came across a large section of titles devoted to this one author, whose name seemed vaguely familiar. The truth is I wasn't ready for the trip to end, was dreading the return to my New York routine, and this was my way of extending it. I'd never before read a japanese author, and had no interest in doing so. I had way too many books already on my list to go searching for new writers. But I liked this one immediately. It's a great read on a 13 hour flight. The book is whimsical, dream like at times but still grounded in the mushy reality of a guy who drifts around, writes about restaurants, and probably drinks too much. Though he is looking for something he lost four years ago, he seems in no particular rush to find it. His life sort of reminded me of my own while I was away. It taught me to take my time, allow life to unfold if I wanted any mystery in it. There are too many things to stay on top of in New York. Too many, musts, shoulds, and I really need to's in my life to wander. It reminded me of how important it is.

My first experiance with Chinese philosophy. I found the advice to leaders on how to best rule the people while simultaneously inspiring their loyalty psychologically astute. Although the writing style is fairly direct (in comparison to other Chinese philosophers), having a background in Chinese history and culture is helpful when trying to understand the meaning behind the text.
