I hate it when I have to dislike a book that I agree with in principle because of the way those principles are presented. The author is a lawyer, not a journalist, but still the spin is profound. I felt duped midway through to find out she's married to a cattle rancher, and that fact shoots holes in her credibility. While she does make some good points, this isn't a sustainable-food-lit book that I would recommend to anyone just getting into the subject.

As Laurie goes on, her books get more and more literary; the world her characters inhabit becomes increasingly lush and well-appointed. In Locked Rooms, Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes, with whom I fell in love back in The Beekeeper's Apprentice travel to San Francisco to solve a mystery out of Russell's past, but at times that seems almost beside the point. Russell and Holmes dance through the landscape of a city still on some levels reeling from the great earthquake twenty-odd years previously, meeting an array of flappers, Chinese immigrants, and mysterious baddies; at one point, Holmes teams up with Dashiell Hammett to track down the crook. This book marks a departure from previous books in the series by following Holmes (third person limited narration). King seems somewhat at a loss to explain how these sections fit into the Game*, suggesting that perhaps Ms. Russell needed to disassociate herself from the events of the book. This explanation is the only place where the book stumbles, as the Holmes sections seem to chronical events outside Russell's scope of knowledge and bring up feelings/thoughts on Holmes's part that she couldn't have been aware of, and one can hardly imagine Holmes writing about himself in the third person. The sections are fascinating for the glimpse they give of the way the rest of the world views Mary Russell (and for their take on the Russell/Holmes relationship) and as long as King's explanation is disregarded, they enhance rather than confuse the narrative. All in all, a well written and interesting novel, good for someone who is looking for a little more in a mystery than "somebody got dead". *The Game: a term Holmes fans use to refer to the idea that Holmes was real, Watson was his biographer, and Conan Doyle was merely his well-intentioned literary agent; similarly, under the rules of the Game, King is merely Ms. Russell's editor/literary executrix.

The rivalry between two fictional magicians living in 19th century Britain is explored in this wonderful novel, which beautifully imitates the style of writing of that period. The book even contains footnote references to other fictional works in the style of that period. The story is compelling, and the fantasy marvellous, but it's a long book so not for the faint of heart.

I was nervous about this book - it didn't grab me until I was 50 or so pages in, but once it did, I enjoyed the spin on the classic Romeo-Juliet story.

Sally Gearhart is a California lesbian feminist who posses the wisdom to have sorted out the meanings specifically for feminists from the traditional interpretations of the Tarot. She has also written other books which are each amazing in their own way. I met Sally cover the Campaign Against the "Brigg's Initiative" or "No on Proposition 6 Campaign in the seventies. I interviewed her at that time for GayLife Newspaper in Chicago. An intelligent, thoughtful, articulate woman; she has my greatest respect. The publication date is 1997, but I know I owned it in a previous edition in the late 70's.

I found this to be a really heavy read, however, it is so well written that even though I didn't feel as though I wanted to know what was coming next I kept turning page after page till I reached the end. By that time I was emotionally exhausted, but still somehow satisfied.

Enjoyable and I could definitely relate to certain aspects of the characters lives, but it did not live up to the reviews. I don't like how the flap copy avoids 9/11 but that the turning point in the story surrounds it. Not cool.

A breathtaking account of a young woman's tale through slavery. While I admit that I was slightly hesitant to read this book at first, because somebody told me it was horrible (how wrong they were...I should have known better anyways, they hate books like this), but I read it. How glad am I that I have! The writing is great, the plot (for the most part)fast paced as well as descriptive. What could be missing in this book? Not much, that is for certain. I would recommend this book for those that like history-like novels, but also to those who are ready for a combination of love, pain, as well as bitter action. All I can say now, is read it, and enjoy great Canadian writing!!!

What more can be said about Vonnegut's singular vision? Who else can at once be so withering and so tender? 'Galapagos' is far from his most incendiary (so to speak) work, but a few days spent in the company of such a mind -- quirky and humane, warped yet clear-sighted -- makes for a good time.
