I loved the romance of this, the love and fights of the couple. It was the conversation that lacked for me. The dialogue was kind of cheap and almost silly sometimes. It was a nice easy read. I think I might have been excited about the concept of the plot too much, then the cheesy dialogue made it all seem silly. It was good, but I think it could have been better.

I read this book after I saw Edward Albee on C-SPAN talking at a meeting of the National Press Club in the mid-90s about his plays. Among the things he said, he volunteered that he wrote "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" in response to Eugene O'Neill's "The Iceman Cometh". Shortly after that, I began wondering whether Hemingway might have written "The Old Man and the Sea" in response to Melville's "Moby Dick". I had been wanting to read Hemingway's short Pulitzer Prize-winning novel anyway. It's really a great book. I also like Hemingway's short story "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place".
