I came across this in the discount bin when I worked at a bookstore a LONG time ago and thought it looked funny and bought it for Ryan without reading it. But after reading it: it's actually quite a good book. Great children's story, full of magic.

I fell in love with this book when I read it as a 12-year-old. Despite having had to study it in high school, I still more than like this book. The cultural insight was fresh and exciting. And I was able to relate to Josie as an "ethnic" person living in Australia. Her problems, emotional turmoil and constant suffering were so familiar it hurt sometimes but this was the book that got me through those difficult racist moments in high school.

Probably one of the most surreal, thought provoking, and weird (in a good way) books I have read. It is a shame O'Brien is so under-appreciated. He deserves a lot more attention for his vivid descriptions and brilliant plotting. The writers on Lost only wish they could reveal information as adeptly as this. The descriptions of landscape and characters reminded me of the animation of Terry Gilliam and I kept imagining that giant hand sitting outside the police station. Anyway, I cannot recommend this book enough and anyone reads it and wants to talk about bicycles I would love to discuss it with you.

In simple rhyming text reminiscent of Dr. Seuss, Weeks introduces two cats, Macaroni and Cheese. Mac is the optimist and Cheese is always negative, pooh-poohing fish from the trash, a funny hat, and slumping around. While Mac energetically dances and sings, Cheese “does not like anything.” This funny little story will charm the newest readers.

This is a great book with lots of treasures inside, not just for the children in the story, who learn so much, but for readers from the outside as well. It's one I'll read again and again and share with my children.

1968 was easily the most intense year of my life. The New Left was surging with Johnson's vast escalation of the war, the Democratic Party was splitting in response, and I just barely managed to get on the wave that crashed in the streets of Chicago during the Convention in August, seeing much of it, meeting some of the principals. I'd been working for Eugene McCarthy's campaign since 1967 at about which time I'd also joined the YPSL and the SDS, these divided loyalties reflecting some of the divisions of the time. In June of 1968, however, I went to Honolulu for two months and worked for the campaign there until sneaking back to Chicago for the Convention without telling the parents. Sherrill's Drugstore Liberal was the book for the long flights from Chicago to San Francisco, where I saw hippies all over the place, and from San Francisco to Oahu. A biography of Hubert Humphrey, it reconfirmed, in its portrayal of his career as a red-baiter and Minnesota boss, my commitment to Eugene about whom I'd also been reading a lot. Ironically, on the day before the 1968 election, after months of wearing a Stop HHH button, I actually, upon the urging of friends, went door-to-door for the guy. He was bad, yes, but not as bad as Nixon.

Great book on L2TP. If you are administrating WAN connections or any type of remote-access, you really should read this book.

I enjoyed this book. I wrote a review and then read everyone else's review and decided to return to write something more to the point. Some people did not even finish the book so I'd like highlight a few important concepts Surowiecki was trying to communicate. The four essential conditions that make up a smart or wise crowd are: - Diversity of Opinion Each person must have some private information that he/she brings to the group. Their own interpretation or their own understanding of the problem space or a related problem space. - Independence People hold to their own reasoning to some degree - Decentralization Individuals are able to specialize and draw on their local knowledge. Someone is going to be closest to a certain aspect of the problem space and this is what is meant by local knowledge. - Aggregation The means to synthesize the thoughts of the team in to a collective decision. All four need to be met in order for the crowd to be wise. If you experience in life has been that crowds are dumb, changes are one of these four conditions were missing. In order to reorient yourself to what Surowiecki is saying, it may require an entirely new framing of your world and some are just not willing to do that. The book is fantastic and required reading for people in a leadership position.
