A funky mix of DC Comics legacy examination, Tarantino style pop culture binging, and the continuing story of Opal City, with its myriad of heroes, villains, and those in between. Jack Knight, the reluctant Starman with his love of junk, old school pop kitsch, is essentially an autobiographical super powered representation of writer James Robinson, and his adoring pop nostalgia monologues can be both fun and overkill, but it is the immense supporting cast that sell the comic. Ted Knight, the first 1940's era Starman, and Jack's relationship as a father and son slowly learning to respect and understand each other again; Nash, the daughter of one of Ted's old foes who decides to personally orchestrate Jack and herself as epic arch-nemesis' (replaying their fathers legacy) is a great femme fatale with a warped sense of honor; the O'Dares a family of cops in counterbalancing roles against each other; Mikal Tomas, an enigmatic alien who also once bore the name Starman (there are a multitude); the Shade, a villain rebooted as a debonair mystic near immortal (two famed Victorian era writers were associates) dedicated to keeping the streets of his city quiet from the crime that rages in Gotham, Metropolis. There is also an architectural grace to Tony Harris' and Robinson's evocations of Opal City- from the illustrations of varying building styles, the layers of history revealed in different sections of the city. Since it was a comic that started in the '90's, it's nice also that there's a recognition of the history of how comics/life in Opal City changed: the hero does have conflicting morals but still end up trying to do the right thing, the villains are grittier and darker but this is recognized with sorrow and regret (kudos for the Ragdoll story and its precognitive example of the foolish banality of pop iconography of villainy ala every stupid kid that gets Heath Ledger Joker makeup on their face), and an overarching sense of the past imbuing the future of the city and the story. If the standard is kept up, this series could be verging on Sandman uniqueness and quality.
