I would have never gotten pass the third chapter of this book if it hadn't been an Advanced English class 'assignment'. I must say that I was glad I did finish it because so much of the story has stayed with me for the last 4 decades. The catch 22 that arises throughout the book is so relatable to things that happen to us all, from the man who was pronounced dead simply because he was on the roster even though everyone knew he was right there with them to the we can let you out if you are crazy but if you ask us to let you out, it proves you are not crazy but even if you are crazy we can't let you out. I can still see Snowden sitting naked in the tree with his chocolate covered cotton balls (at least that is how I remember it from 41 years ago!).

This book has seeped deep into my brain, and will most likely be resting there for some time to come. Bolaño's poet/artist/pilot/sadist serial killer Carlos Weider is one of the more disturbing creations pulled out of the sewer of fascist ideal I've yet to run across. I'm thrilled he took what was the best and most disturbing of vignettes from his book Nazi Literature in the Americas and splayed out the story to its full and terrifying potential.

I almost didn't give this book a chance because of the title... and that would have been a huge mistake. It is one of the most thoughtful memoirs I've read. It's full of history, politics, and insightful cultural analysis. So much resonated. I couldn't put it down.

Erg goed boek. Zoals te verwachten van een eerste deel uit een trilogie is dit slechts een kleine introductie tot de wereld van 1q84. Het is duidelijk dat dit deel, hoewel het plot ook enigszins voortgaat, voornamelijk dient om de personages te introduceren en uit te diepen. En in dat opzicht is het boek enorm goed geslaagd. Dit boek is mijn tweede Murakami na De Opwindvogelkronieken en hoewel het niet in de buurt komt van de genialiteit van dat boek is dit een heerlijke introductie van een verhaal dat een spannend, avontuurlijk en vooral weer surrealistisch epos gaat worden.

Fires of Heaven starts off slow. In fact, it starts off by reminding us of all that happened in TSR. The ending is by far the most complex yet - while previous books were obviously setting up sequels, the "ending" here is leaves quite a few thrones vacant and is turning Rand almost more desparate than ever. Biggest highlight for me was Moiraine. Way to go, girl. Biggest lowlight - the catfights between Nynaeve and Elyane. It is actually interesting to learn what is actually at the core of Nynaeve, even if she doesn't really see it yet.

Psycho thriller which grabs you right from the beginning. Very gripping and hard to put down. Gets somewhat fragmented at the end and does not go in the direction you would expect. Overall an OK book worth reading.
