A very thorough and yet literary biography of cancer. While the stories the book chronicles are often depressing, the author's effort to make the history of cancer come alive is evident. The book does get quite technical towards the end, as we're trying to follow a cascade of genetic events that takes a cell from normal to malignant, but the author's ability to draw parallels between past and present keeps the book centered. Breast cancer runs in my family, and I am glad that I have a more in depth understanding of the disease should my number be drawn.

This is a perfect read on the beach or in the summer when you can picture the colorful, summery language in the book. It's about a love story set between the daughter of a local physicians and a captain, set during the occupation of the Greek Islands during WWII.

Wow, this book was so much better than I thought it might be - I really enjoyed reading it. Rather southern in flavor with some great values expressed through the characters - kind of in the style of To Kill a Mockingbird. I would read more by this author.

I love books that play with time. You'll see this theme a lot in my selections. I think they are more like life in the sense that, in our minds, we often live at once in the past and present, all the while dreaming of the future. The furious play of these concurrent mental dramas and their influence on our choices is well represented in this novel. With regard to this, I am often reminded of a friend's father who would always say, when asked why some modern convenience or custom did not suit him, "You are what you were when" As if the past were an inescapable tether. I admit I often think that way myself. But the more I break with that, the freer I feel.
