A Raymond Chandler-Philip K Dick cocktail, with a few dashes of Aldous Huxley and Anthony Burgess. An enjoyable read, a step above a "beach book" or "airport book', several steps above forumulaic mystery or sci-fi/fantast lit. I'd be interested in what my Goodread friends think. (I was amused by the reactions of other "reviewers" who took umbrage at the "paranoid right-wing fanatical" projection of what America looks like in 2033. On the one hand I want to say, "Hey, it's a story!" and on the other I want to say, "Can you think of an alternative?" I had never heard of this author, but I kept seeing it on people's book lists with 5 stars -- even people who seemed otherwise fairly conservative in their ratings were saying his books were "amazing." What finally clinched it for me was when my friend Zoe only had a handful of books listed, and they were all by this author, and they were all 5 stars. So, what did I think? I really, really liked it. He is a great story teller, and I loved the characters. I only withhold that 5th star because the whole thing was just a bit too much of a confection -- it was a wonderful treat, but ultimately not completely satisfying. I will definitely read more books by this author, though.

The author took a very long time to tell a good story. I liked the message and the story... but she had a lot of details that I just didn't like. It was hard to read in some places.

Upon finishing this book, I have some mixed feelings about it. Let's start with it's good, strong points. I appreciated the fact that Patricia Briggs didn't come up with another fae story because it would be too tiring and wouldn't make any different impression than the previous fae related books in my opinion. It was interesting to see how she dealt with the Native American heritage of Mercy (although I got to admit the whole lineage tribe thing was a little boring). I especially loved how she created the different spirits. In addition, I liked how she wrote a bit more about Mercy's family ties with her existing non-supernatural family, because it gives you a different insight to the character. Now there were several weak points for me in this book, not that discouraging enough for me to abandon the series of course. First of all, I missed a lot all the secondary characters that surrounded Adam and Mercy in the previous books. Adam/Mercy ship or not it was also the other characters that gave the books the special ingredients for the plot. The new characters introduced were just a bit too many, too similar to not be easily distinguished and with none too great an impact. I think this deficiency also manifested in the "Evil" of this book which was another flesh eating monster that could possibly conquer the world. It's a bit disappointing because Briggs has showed in her previous books that she can write better than that and not copy an old recipie. To sum up, I still loooove the series and the universe but I'm expecting something more in her writing and plot after six books because there are still infinite possibilities for developing.

As all reviews of this novel have stated, if you enojyed Orwells 1984, you'll enjoy this. True...I did enjoy Orwells 1984, but I LOVED The Handmaid's Tale. I have read this book over and over again since I was 15 (and I am 25 now!). Most recently picked it up last summer. I have even gotten my husband to read it and he even said he would read it again. Give it a chance and read it. It's an amazing story of how strong a woman can be when she is left with no choice.
