The first PKD book I've had the pleasure to read. I've always imagined Dick as the real-life Kilgore Trout, and I'm interested in picking up a few more of his works. It's sort of amazing to note what sort of foresight Dick had, while at the same time he has his characters listening to quadrophonic phonographs. I've noticed that Dick is not really at all a master of dialogue, but more one of ideas (perhaps why so many screenplays based on his work have made it). He also seems to have a pretty heady knowledge of drugs and their psychoactive effects. As I've heard of many of his works, this one is centered in a police state -- and part of what's interesting about that is how it gets subverted. An enriched version of this novel, with a narrative that shifted between the plot in the late 80s (post-Second Civil War!) US and the often-alluded-to forced-labor camps on other planets might have been neat. As it is, this novel is a pretty tangled web and not everything gets answered to satisfaction -- that's OK. It's a very quick read and a nice dive into a singular visionary of sci-fi.

Much like Green's other two books, Looking for Alaska is a likeable book with a tinge of sadness (granted much greater than what we see in An Abundance of Katherines or Paper Towns). The story focuses on a group of friends at a boarding school in Alabama- primarily "Pudge" who decides to go to the school instead of public school to follow his "great perhaps". Green's characters always have a certain something to them- in this case Pudge memorizes people's last words. Pudge quickly acquires a close-knit group of trouble-making friends- the Colonel, Takumi, Alaska, and Lara. Though he ends up dating Lara, Alaska is the real focus of his attention. The book is written leading up to a certain event (chapter titles like "forty-five days before") which keeps the reader interested in just where the plot is going. This is a good book for older teens. The issues that are handled are heavy (death, poverty, sex) but done in a way that is very appealing for teens. As usual, Green's voice feels authentic.

I had to read it for my Class and now am about to write a paper on this book. If you read the book without any background I think it will procure very little amusement since Austen defies a lot of conventions of her times regarding the literary propriety or history for that matter. The events certainly can not be taken as factual but as an attempt to depict the real emotions of human beings, and manners especially of that era. If you are read enough to discern little tricks she uses in this book, your experience will greater manifold. Anyways, a very good book. Glad I have read it and my favorite among the bunch that required reading for this class. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT......... hopefully no one from my class is reading this and thinking "WHAT A NERD" I could be.

This is the first book I read on women's spirituality and, to say the least, I was floored. I didn't know other women felt as betrayed by Christianity as I did and I'm so glad she put it in writing. Although I can't take the seemingly expensive and extensive spiritual trips she takes or agree with every spiritual conclusion she reaches, I am grateful that Kidd decided to share her journey with me. I encourage all women to read it and take from it what's true for them and leave the rest.
