X Men meets Diary of a Wimpy Kid meets My Bodyguard meets The Witches meets overwrought prose -- especially at the beginning -- and a collection of awkwardly incorporated vintage photos. The narrator's voice is as uneven (is Jacob a wiser-than-his-years smartass, or is he Encyclopedia Brown, earnestly trying to solve the mystery of his beloved grandfather's death?) as the photos (the photo of Emma and Jacob's grandfather is just wrong; it doesn't match the description of the photo in the book, and the woman in the picture is too old and not nearly as beautiful as the Emma Jacob describes). This book clearly tried to piece together a story from a series of photos, and it did so with mixed results.

I loved this book. I went into it with no expectations- haveing heard about it (surprise, surprise) on NPR. You never know what you're going to get when the book jacket describes a story set in a Depression-era traveling circus with an emotional elephant, all wrapped up as a love story. I read part of the first chapter online, and was hooked and had to go buy the book. I couldn't put it down, and once finished, I've actually read it again. True mark of a good book if I go back and read it.
