While a strange affection for the Novak family keeps me reading this series, I had a LOT of problems with this book. Some of them were my same reservations from book 1, but also quite a few new ones as well. Most of my issues must stem from the fact that I'm just not in the author's bible study group, however I truly think some of the flaws would persist no matter my belief system. In any event, I'll probably read book 3 just to see what happens with the last brother, but I won't pick up any further books from this author & I'll be more careful in the future with trying "Christian" fiction. Perhaps a large warning label on the front of these books would have been in order: "If you don't attend my church, read with caution".

Library book club pick. I liked this more than I thought I would. The writing isn't amazing, but the characters were interesting, and at the end I wanted it to keep going. It was melodramatic, but in a satisfying way.

For some reason, I thought I would be more moved by this story, which depicts what I imagine to be the very real-life despair and obsession that occur when a teenaged child goes missing and remains so for years and years. O'Nan does more than a capable job of relating the feelings of the teen's parents, a sibling, and friends, which run the expected course of guilt, hope, and inability to ever fully move beyond their loss. And maybe for me, that was the problem: I feel like I've seen the same thing in a number of movies and TV dramas. Of course, I'm not sure the story be told any differently and still remain realistic. But, well, the terrain was already too-well trod before O'Nan stepped in with this version. In the end, I just wish I'd encountered the author with a different story first.

A great story stretched out over 30 years. For anyone who's seen the movie, the book is a must-read. The film (A Door In The Floor) doesn't do the book an iota of justice.
