I have been reading all the Tom Perrotta books and I think this one might be the saddest, in terms of what it reveals about the nature of dreams and in this case, not knowing when to let them go. Many of the later books involve some middle aged person undergoing a crisis (with the exception of Joe College, which is about a 20-something) but this one is about a somewhat younger character and has the funny yet depressing theme of growing up and getting over your adolescence. This is the story of Dave, guitarist in the wedding group the Wishbones, who somewhat impulsively decides to ask his girlfriend of fifteen years to marry him. The fact that he has been with the same girl...on and off...for so long indicates a serious problem, an inability to get over himself and commit to something other than his music. Additionally, there is his affair with a woman in the city, which tests and challenges his upcoming marriage and makes him wonder why he is going through with it. He is hanging on to his dream of being a rock star when the dream has long since moved past him. It is heartbreaking, but you spend more time laughing out loud at the way the story unfolds. I enjoy Tom Perrotta's books so much I almost hate that I read them so fast. I also think that he has an excellent sense for writing about relationships, often nailing the many feelings we go through when we are in one. Soooo good! Bad Haircut next!

This one was disappointing in a few ways: first, the first quarter or so of the book was extremely engaging as we followed Franz on his adventure. There was more than one time that I thought to myself "this language is so beautiful I can hardly contain myself." I mean, there are few things better in life than Nabokov writing madness in some form, right? The disappointing part was that it really slowed down toward the middle and never really picked by up. By the end, things had really just petered out, and while I was interested in what was happening with the characters, I just didn't feel engaged like I wanted to. The second disappointment is that this is my second Nabokov and my first was Pale Fire, arguably one of the greatest books ever written. This is the curse of reading an author's lesser known, lesser admired work after reading one of his masterpieces. All in all, it was still an enjoyable read - just not too exciting.

Oh my goodness... I can say this was one of the most interesting books I have read in a while. Though I didn't like the tense the author used (probably because it was different and I was not used to it) it was very adventurous and interesting. This book was very unique, had a captivating plot-line, and right from the beginning I was hooked. Though there was a lot of gore in this book, and some of the killings were vividly described, I enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone and everyone.

My thoughts: I had heard good things about this series, and then book 1 got re-published so of course I had to take a look, and I am glad I did. The book is about Xylara, and she is one brave woman. I admired her strength, and courage. She was taken as a warprize, but instead of sitting in a tent being scared she went outside and found the tent with wounded soldiers and got straight to work. She knew what she wanted and that was to help people. The hero in the book is the warlord that crushed all resistance and took over their country (which is a good thing because her brother is a hopeless and bad king, so perhaps it was for the best). Anyway Keir was strong too, protective, and he wanted her, but he also wanted her to want him. He is one barbarian to fall hopelessly in love with. The whole book is told in 1-person, so we always got her thoughts and fears, and it does work. Because this way there is a lot of confusion and fear in the air. I had no idea what a warprize was, neither had she, and I wanted to know. Then when I the reader finally found it, oh I will not tell you, but it sure made the book good. What we have in this book is one strong woman, a feared warlord, and some behind the scenes backstabbing and politics. Some are not happy that the firelanders won and they want revenge. Danger is in the air, from both sides, since there is this one firelander warrior that wants to take over as warlord. The book has a happy ending, even though there is a book 2 and 3. I was glad for this because I just wanted happiness. Conclusion: A good fantasy romance, I would recommend this book to others, and I do want to read book 2 and 3. It has so much to offer, a good couple, great side characters, and interesting world, and a story that will have you turning page after page top find out more. Rating: I enjoyed it, a quick read.
