Delighted to find another retold fairy tale. The first two thirds of the book is excellent as the author re-images the East of the Sun, West of the Moon tale in a Norwegian setting. Note also the strands that are elements of Beauty and the Beast, and the Greek myth of Psyche and the lamp. (See also Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis.) The lass must live for one year with the enchanted "ice bear", whom she comes to love; but she risks all by sneaking a peak at a night-time bed fellow. The second half of the story is less effective. It loses the pace and becomes bogged down at the palace of the troll queen and her ugly daughter. I felt as though the author couldn't figure out exactly how to bring the story to a conclusion, and began jerking the characters around at will. I would have rated it more highly if she could have retained the mystique of the beginning!

Holy melting icicle!!! This was a page-turner that I couldn't put down. I was so, so surprised to find out who the culprit was!! I never expected that!! An excellent read!

A good beginning for someone interested in sustainable design, but definitely not an in depth book for those already steeped in the practice of sustainable design. If you want a good general overview this is a great place to start.

Last Half of Book My final verdict is I really liked the book. The second half kept me turning pages desperate to know what the heck was going on. My only complaint is the same as before. Evie hated how she was trapped with the agency, but did nothing to try to leave. She didn't leave until she was forced to by circumstances. Still she did nothing about learning what was up with her life until she was forced to learn more. I can see why. All of a sudden she had a semi-normal life, and who would muck it up by seeking to know paranormal stuff? Anyway, I really enjoyed it in the end even though the book kept me constantly frustrated. I will definitely continue with this series when the next book is available. First Half of Book My thoughts so far is I like this book, but some things are frustrating. Like Evie is basically a prisoner of the organization she works for, but all she does about it is give a half whine and let it go. Really? How about busting out of there or at least making an attempt to? And the guy she makes friends with Lend is a prisoner of another type. She asks if he has family, and he says I can't tell you that yet. But she has basically told him every single secret she can think of about her life. How about a little give and take? How about just one thing? Nope. She gets on my nerves. Other than all of that, I still like the book and want to know the mystery of who is killing paranormals and what's important about Evie. I'll keep reading and hope that my opinion of her stupidity changes.
I really enjoyed Everything is Obvious. Watts's thesis is that "common sense" is a wonderful tool for making sense out of what has happened, but that it is not good at grasping the true reality behind complex things. As an example, he talks about how we refer to "the market" in near-human terms, saying things like "the market reacted to the Fed report" or "the market fell because of bad housing data". These explanations simplify things far too much - "the market" is a huge, complex system of people, businesses, and machines, and can't be condensed (in general) into these summaries. They are, rather, a way of making some sense of what happened. If they truly captured something of reality, then they would have predictive power - that is, the next time that bad housing data came out, we could predict that the market would fall approximately the same amount. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way - the cause and effect isn't that cut and dry. Another example that I loved was that of a sociologist who told his students that during World War II the soldiers from rural areas adapted to the war much better than those from urban areas, and asked his students to think about why. They suggested that it was common sense - they were used to waking up early, working hard, going without luxuries, etc. Only it wasn't true. In fact, urban soldiers fared much better. Our mind is just so good at thinking up explanations to fit what we think we know, and these explanations quickly pass into "common sense". Dr. Watts argues that we need to question common sense more often, and that we are living in a technological age where that is becoming more and more realistic.

I love this writer and this book. So, you may ask why I am having difficulty getting past page 89! I have no idea other than I think to truly appreciateGarcia Marquez, you need to have quiet and peace. Something which is in rare supply in my life right now. I am going to come back to this book when things are calmer in my life... when I can appreciate his fluid writing more.

Although it fills in background and details not included in the film, this is a rare case of "the movie is better than the book." Still, an easy and interesting read.
