I re-read this book every few years. Did I mention that I enjoy reading about sideshow freaks?

Looks like this will be an action packed series for young teen historical fiction. There is some swearing I didn't care for.

This book was definitely interesting but the first half was really difficult to read. It brought up some interesting questions and discussion topics, but was very disturbing. I'm glad I finally read it though! It's been on my list for a while.

A wonderful book. Since it's the story of an African girl who was kidnapped and brought as a slave to the Carolinas, I expected it to be very dark. But Hill's main character, Aminata, is so strong, so vital, that the story becomes much more than the sum of its heart-breaking details. It's ultimately a very redemptive book--even triumphant.

Highly recommend this book. I loved the author's attitude and willingness to honestly point out her faults and failings. I found myself often identifying with Gretchen and the aspects of her life she was struggling to improve (I am also a chronic nagger, hate losing my cool with my kids, need more energy, just to identify a few). I've already tried to put a few of her ideas into practice and am seriously considering undertaking a more formal "Happiness Project" as well. It doesn't matter if overall your life is pretty good, as mine is, there are always ways to improve it.

the book starts slowly, and at first I thought it was going to be merely a thick description of life in the Dutch trading port of Nagasaki circa 1800. Although I can't decide if this is praise or mild criticism, I will admit that Mitchell has a penchant for writing 'beautiful', even quasi-poetic prose. In this he is attempting to evoke the otherness of the Closed Empire and the feelings of his characters through poetic phrasing. Some of this was effective, but I found it wore a bit as the book progressed. But aside from this cavil, I highly recommend the book. Indeed, after a somewhat slow start, things started happening about 150 pages into it and what had seemed to be a placid 'descriptive' novel grew into a complex story about relationships, desire, loss, and contemplations about duty. A love story emerges, juxtaposed with plot elements involving intrigue, cultural difference, and even a little action. I'm very glad I kept at this book, for it turned into one of the best I've read in a while. If I could give 4.5 stars, I would.

Another great read from Billie Letts, author of Where The Heart Is. The Honk & Holler introduces us to some very interesting characters, their life in a small town cafe and a great story line. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and look forward to Billie Letts' next book coming out in July 2004 called "Shoot The Moon". From the back cover: "Caney Paxton wanted his cafe to have the biggest and brightest sign in Eastern Oklahoma-the "opening soon" part was supposed to be just a removable, painted notice. But a fateful misunderstanding gave Vietnam vet Caney the flashiest joke in the entire state. Twelve years later, the once busy highway is dead, the joke is old, and the sign is as worn as Caney, who hasn't ventured outside the diner since it opened. The regulars at the Honk, still gabbing and crabbing over hot java and eggs easy, haven't changed much either. Then one blustery December day a thirtyish Crow woman blows in with a half-dead three-legged dog in her arms and a long buried secret on her mind. Hiring on as a carhop, Vena Takes Horse is soon shaking up business, the locals, and Caney's heart...as she teaches them all about generosity of spirit, love, and the possibility of promise-just like the sign says."
