I thought it was awful, just awful! Sorry to all my wonderful book friends who loved this book, but to me it was well, in a word "awful." I guess it could be me (hear me sniveling?), as I like my funny characters to be funny which oftentimes means to step out of character and do something outrageous. Case in point would be Timothy Cavendish of Cloud Atlas: A Novel fame. Now, that man was hysterically funny without really meaning to be. In the current book, our protagonist just is plain stupid, sniveling, and blaming his ills of character on everyone other than himself. Perhaps that is what makes him funny to others, but to me he was just a PITA. I guess the writing was ok, but when you despise the main character, it is hard to work up any steam for the writing style of the character's creator. At least for me, I had to push myself through what I felt was a tortuous read. Yes, I know I could have quit, but unlike our character, Ignatius, I am not a quitter. Realizing there are many ills in society and poking fun at them is fun and oftentimes funny. However, I could not even bring a smile up from those deep recesses where my funny bone lies for this novel or it tragic main character. I think I felt more pity for someone so ill equipped to face any of the world. Ignatius was just a sad whiney man and to me there is nothing worse in the world than a person who has had opportunity and thrown it all away.

A departure by Hurley from the Joe Faraday series set in Portsmouth. Nevertheless this is a fast paced thriller that is impossible to put down.

I'm very biased about this book because my dad, Joseph Peter Hoffman, was one of the forgotten 500. I'm so appreciative to Gregory Freeman for bringing this event to a potentially large audience. My father never spoke much about his experience, but we would hear more about it from the more vocal crew members that he kept in contact with throughout his life. His crew bailed out due to mechanical issues with their plane. One of his crewmates broke his leg during the landing, and he was carried by his crewmates to safety (many miles). These men were bonded with one another in ways that I will never understand. I had no idea the level of politics that was involved in this entire situation. The beginning of the book was heavy on this politics, but I understand how important it was to giving the rationale for why no one had ever heard about it. I would have enjoyed hearing more about the trials and tribulations of the 500. My father died a few months before this book was published. I only wish that it had come out a few years earlier.

In this fanciful novel from Cecelia Ahern, a teenage girl is forced by tragedy to move from her lavish, pampered lifestyle in Dublin to a remote country village, where she and her mother move in with relatives. While Tamara is struggling to cope with the abrupt and painful changes to her life, she discovers a diary that, magically, appears to show her events that will take place on the following day, through diary entries written in her own hand. Partly through the process of deciphering the diary entries, Tamara also discovers that things are not as they seem with her family and this sets off a journey of discovery that will change Tamara forever. Tamara must decide whether and the extent to which she will attempt to change the future as predicted in the diary and must deal with the consequences of her choices. This book is a very quick read but, surprisingly, has a decent amount of depth and real character development. Tamara starts off as a super bratty, shallow, bitchy teenager but, over the course of the book, develops some serious insight and perspective and grows enormously as a person. Through what has become a trademark fanciful flair, Cecelia Ahern explores grief, jealousy, revenge, despair and deception in an interesting and unique way. It's not Shakespeare, but it is certainly enjoyable.

I loved this book--terrific characters, real immersion into Filipino culture during the Marcos regime. Some brilliant literary passages as well.

I found this book to read so much faster than I I guessed it would take. The book essentially starts in the the present and goes back in time which is an interesting manner to get to know the characters in the snapshot portrayals.
