** spoiler alert ** "The way out is down!" Alan Carpentier returns to Hell proper after seeing Benito Mussolini escape. Why linger in Hell when you can get out? Because spiritually, morally, philosophically, Carpentier needs to know that any one can get out. Niven & Pournelle use the backdrop of their original Inferno to further discuss the purpose and implications of hell. What is the point of eternal torture? Is it really eternal? The authors explore these (and other) ideas intelligently, providing excellent contemporary allegories, vivid description, and snappy dialogue. The writing was addictive - I blazed through the hardcover back in April, and revisited it with the Audiobook version in May. Both reads were excellent. It does get a bit longwinded, but with Wikipedia handy, researching some of the characters used in the book makes for an interactive hellish adventure.

In the two years covered, these children are continually confronted by gangs, drugs, and violence while they might be able to put greater emphasis on education if they lived in a different environment. Kotlowitz does an excellent job recounting the everyday triumphs and struggles of these boys and simultaneously brings attention to a major problem facing many large American cities.

I am enjoying these books... sort of. The author was a TV sitcom writer, and the books kind of read like that - each book (or each couple of books) is its own episode. The problem is never so complicated that it can't be solved within a book or two, and once characters are taken care of, they're just out of the picture - none of the dangerous, menacing characters that were simply banished ever come back. Some just drop out of the story altogether, despite not ever being dealt with. I think I sometimes feel like all the ends are not tied up. I don't think the author does a very good job of showing time passing, either. Despite all this, however, I'm still enjoying reading them, mostly because I like the characters so much. My favorite parts to read are the parts where Will and Horace are together - I think their relationship as best friends is my favorite in the whole series. As long as the two of them are together in the story, I don't get tired of it. When they're not together, the story drags a bit. I don't have too many more books to go, though, and they're easy reads, so I think I'll just stick it out to the end of the series.
