** spoiler alert ** Of Mice and Men is a riveting story of the hardships of gaining the American Dream. George and Lennie are diligent farm workers who travel and work to earn a stake. The dream of one day saving up enough money to own a piece of land for themselves. Characters and events are meant to represent the Depression Era of the United States. The speaking and tone of each character is realistic and portrayed the time period. The story line shows exactly what the title tries to say, that the best laid plans Of Mice and Men often go askew. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who does not necessarily like happy endings as well. What I like about this story the most is the title. It comes from a poem called To a Mouse by Robert Burns. It says that "The best laid schemes of mice and men, Go often askew." And that is exactly what this story is about. Two men, George and Lennie, are working to earn money so that one day, the two of the can "live of the fatta' the land" and don't have to work for anyone else. Of course from the very beginning they aren't doing so well, as they are running from the authorities in Weed, where Lennie lifted a girl's skirt. In the end, after nothing else goes right, George is forced to shoot Lennie in the back of the head. The title has so much meaning behind it and really represents the entire book. It shows that every thing that can go wrong, will. The symbols in this story are very fascinating. They are meant to represent everything about the Depression time period. Curly's wife is meant to portray women during the time period, as the stable buck is meant to portray African Americans. I think Steinbeck was extremely creative not giving either of these characters names. Steinbeck did a great job of capturing the speech of the time period. He made his characters speak the exact way that most of Americans spoke at the time. As a writer, it may have been difficult at first for him to capture the language in writing, but I think he has it to a tee. If I ever saw such language captured in writing, I'd be amazed because sometimes the way people speak is hard to write. Steinbeck is talented for being able to do so. Of Mice and Men is a captivating and incredible story. It is so interesting that someone wrote a story with an extremely sad ending. It shows that not everything can turn out the way you want it to. Steinbeck is one of the most creative writers whose work I ever read. It seems to me that his characters and dialogue were carefully thought out. I would highly recommend this book.
