This is one of my favorite books. Makes facism seem "A-ok." Not that it really does work (like most forms of government) but after reading this book (and others by Heinlein) I agreed with ideas that were discussed. (like: Only those who've proven that they care about the community and have sacrificed for it should be able to stake claim to public office and voting, etc.) It's good science fiction with aliens and explosions and the like but like classic sci-fi has the exploration of social philosophizing. (I need more parenthesis) ((((())))())

I'm pretty sure I can thank my romanticization of Iowa on W. P. Kinsella. Albeit, indirectly, through the movie Field of Dreams than through any of his books. But they still make Iowa seem magical to me. I was disappointed to see in the short biography of him on the back cover that he lives in the Pacific Northwest.

"Sex education is a joke." Precocious 13 year old Jessie Walters surmises about three seconds before getting caught reading Babylon in Flames when she's supposed to be watching a Sex Ed filmstrip. Oops. I guess the joke's on her because about three pages later she meets Michael Skye, the shaggy haired 17 year old suburban rockstar (and Atlanta transplant) strutting his stuff at the local mall in Hackensack. Jessie decides it's true love and so naturally cannot tell Michael(did I mention she just happens to stumble into a Eddie Nova's guitar studio and Michael happens to be the teacher)anything remotely resembling the truth about herself. If I remember correctly the cheesy 1979 movie starring the baby goddess Denise Miller (most recently seen in the lesbo yukfest April's Shower) and Rex Smith came first and then the novel. Either way this is good stuff here. Jessie is adorable and smart and innocent, but at the same time very savvy. Still she's THIR-FUCKING-TEEN and as her friend Caroline astutely points out, "Older boys are different. They're like MEN only younger." The prose is a bit dodgy and reads something like this... Michael is sexy. Michael is sexy? Is that a chicken on the lawn? Michael and I should be rolling on the lawn... and so forth. Still, rereading it made me feel 13 again and I had to watch the movie and listen to the soundtrack, namely, "You Take My Breath Away" sang in all kinds of cheesetastic, glittery earnest by Rex Smith. sigh.

surprisingly tender in parts. this is a summer couch read. it's uncomplicated, but it has some pretty funny moments and a few moments of observational "truths".

Upon this re-read, I understand why I kept this one and not the previous two. I like this one a lot better; the twists and turns of the plot are just more complex, and it packs a lot more thought into it than the other two. It's much more adult than the other two.

Shadow is a flawed, sympathetic, not always likeable but completely relatable character. I loved her flaws. I enjoyed the growth and development in the relationship between her and the knight, Sir Kenway. They really learned from each other and their journey. While the writing wasn't perfect--I wished for more information about the world and magic, and I thought Shadow meandered a bit in her thoughts and feelings--the book was a great fantasy tale and I zoomed through it in a day.
