From Marcy to Madison Square to the only thing that mattered in just a matter of years, Jay-Z has now put together a surprisingly humble and introspective look back at his life and work. This isn't the guilty throwaway celeb autobio I half expected. Between annotated breakdowns of some of his songs, he offers thoughtful insights on everything from the early days of rap and his slingin rock to sonnet structure and Katrina. (I liked his take on how auto-tune is like hair metal was to real rock.) It's all very grounded and thoughtful.

I have read this book three times. It always holds up. The voice is simple and yet it rings with the power of naming--you get the sense that LeGuin is putting her wizardly teachings into practice. I liked it when Ged figures out that minnow girl's true name (i.e. Minnow) and also when he builds the boat with those nice people from the Western Isles. I guess what I have to say is this: you will be utterly engaged, both by the story and by the pervasive beauty of this world, where each object is invested with the magic of a good short story--strange, with its own inner logic. It's a fast read. Set aside a few hours in the evening, and you won't be able to stop.

A very sad and sometimes funny story about Francesca, a 16 year old girl whose mum (it's Australian) won't get out of bed. Meanwhile, dear Fran is starting out at an all boys school that has just started allowing girls to matriculate. There are four girls and a million obnoxious beasts who tease them and call them "lezzies." It's better than I'm making it sound--I nearly cried at the end.

Perdido Beach, California was a small town famous only for their nuclear reactor and the near melt down fifteen years ago. Now, though, it seems as though they're about to be put on the map for good. If there is still a map to be put on. The morning started out just like any other morning. The kids went to school, the adults went to work. One moment, everything was fine, then, in the blink of an eye, they were gone. Every single person 15 or older just seemed to blink outo f existance, leaving the kids alone to fend for themselves in the FAYZ (Fallout Alley Youth Zone). Further inspection reveals an almost see through barrier that hurts to touch. And, to make matters worse, some of the kids are developing powers. A girl who can shoot fire. A kid that can teleport at a thought. And Sam, the kid who once saved a bus full of kids when the driver had a heart attack, he can shoot what appears to be laser beams from his hands. When Bullies take over the FAYZ, though Sam is forced to fight for the freedom of himself and all the other kids. But is there any way to fight the darkness that dwells in a dark cave? When I read the back Grant's Gone, I thought it sounded fantastic. I couldn't wait to read it. Unfortunately the book fell rather flat, in my opinion. While the plot is good and there are decent characters, Gone just couldn't seem to hold my attention. Generally I find that I can't put down a book because I really want to know what happens next. With Gone, however, I didn't feel that at all. Even when I was reading it I often found my attention wandering. As for the characters...I liked Sam and Astrid well enough. I was certainly rooting for them to win...it was Quinn that I had a real problem with. At first I thought I would love him, because he seemed like that quirky rather weird kid that I generally like in books. Instead I often found myself absolutly furious at him, and at one point he did something that I honestly can't forgive him for. I get the feeling that you were almost supposed to feel that way, but also that Grant wanted you to forgive him at some point...but I can't. It doesn't matter what he does to try and redeem himself, I just can't forgive him... While I don't regret reading the book, I don't feel at all inclined to read anymore in the series.

After a couple better-than-average books, Reichs returns to her formula of coincidence + bones + coincidence + science=mystery. While still fairly entertaining to read, at many times I was asking the book "Really? How convenient." At least Tempe's relationship with Ryan is progressing nicely and gave me a break from the copious eye-rolling. Also enjoyed the characters of Boyd the chow and Detective Rinaldi. Less enjoyable characters include flighty daughter Katy (whose mom worries about her a lot, and should probably take death threats more seriously considering how many times said mom has almost died because of a case) and Detective Homophobic Redneck (Slidell). I think I'll take a break from this series for a while.
